Rescue is the only way you will get one cheaper. K9lvr1219 is an idiot, dog do not have baggage... I volunter for doberman rescue and rescue dogs might have a few problems but they are easily TRAINED out of them, it's usually something that any normal dog owner should have trained for in the beginning. And they are WAY quicker to bond to you than a puppy because they know you got them out of a bad situation and dont have all they "puppy distractions" to keep them from adoring you 24/7 With that said. Bulldogs are RIDICULOUSLY expensive to breed. I should know my stepmom bred her show girl once and ONCE ONLY! She had to be artificially inseminated because the breeding didnt take. Then she had to have a C-section, THEN she was a horrible mother and my stepmom had to take an unpaid vacation to nurse the puppies I even came home my first two weeks of college to help out because she hadnt' gotten any sleep! Its really only through love of the breed that they have survived.... lol. If you can get one cheaper than that DONT that is a REALLY bad sign, usually a quality dog will go for at least $2000 usually more. We had 2 puppies die before they were weaned and one of the idiot owners (my stepmoms, sisters sister in law) that we thought would be a good home walked her in the middle of the day (We live in dallas and it gets just as hot here, though i'm origionally from west texas and prefer the dry heat to the humidity.... bah wrong subject). Anyway my point is, they are expensive because they are hard to bring into the world and even harder to keep around, bullies have LOTS of problems besides the obvious ones like heatstroke and breathing. Even GOOD showdogs will probably get demodectic mange at some time early in their life (it's an immune disorder, not contagious) and are susceptable to staph infections. They also get cherry eye and entropion and severe food allergies (just some of the things WE have had to deal with with our 2 bullies). I'm not trying to bash the breed but if your not willing to pay premium for a puppy then you wont be willing to pay for the extra medical costs that come with the breed and that's just not right. Besides, anybody thats cheaper has something SERIOUSLY wrong with their dogs or is a puppy miller.

So here's the issue with bulldogs...they're super cute and wonderful, but please consider the pros and cons to owning one before you decide to purchase. As an owner of two bullies I can tell you that I have to get up an hour earlier to go through giving them their allergy medication and to thoroughly clean their facial and neck wrinkles, ears, and tail pockets. My female also gets a good cleaning around her female parts and belly because lots of dirt collects in her extra crevices. They don't require as much exercise as other dogs, but they make up for it in time spent in daily grooming and overall care. They will require a very high quality of food to maintain healthy skin, coat, and bone structure, and you will likely spend a lot of time monitoring what they eat due to common allergies among bullies and heavy duty weight gain.

Then you'll have to consider if you can actually afford your bully after the huge price you'll pay when purchasing. There's no such thing as a "cheap" bully. Bulldogs have many issues including heart problems, hip and elbow issues, elongated soft pallette, cherry eyes, entropian (eyelashes facing into the eyeball which causes damage to the eye), and the list goes on. Then you'll have to consider that you're also putting your dog's life into your vet's hands by just getting him/her fixed because bad reactions to anesthesia is a common cause of death in bullies. Then you have the wonderfully unexpected visits to the emergency vet due to an unexpected allergic reaction (like we just had last week). Our dog was stung by a bee and went into antifilactic shock, which caused his throat to close up and sent him into extreme heat exhaustion because he couldn't get enough oxygen. Fortunately the bill was only $900, but it was estimated that we could have been charged up to $1800. Don't forget that bills like this are common place with a bully and can occur several times a year!

Now, if after all of that, you're still interested in getting a bully, I suggest that you contact the bulldog club of America at www.thebca.org to find a responsible breeder in your area. If you purchase through a website or through a newspaper ad, you will be at the mercy of backyard breeders that don't give a hoot about the puppies or the breed, and people that just don't know what they're doing. Puppies from places like this will likely have a lot of health issues, even though even the best breeders cannot guarantee that certain issues will not arise (but they test their bitches and studs to ensure that certain conditions will not be passed on to their brood).

Good luck with your search, I hope you find a great pet!

Have you consider English Bulldog rescue?

I saw two puppies for whom they were seeking homes at an AKC breed rescue in Ft. Worth last year. The rescue society can put you in touch with a reputable breeder, not a puppy mill.

yes the woman i got one of mine from usually has a litter and she is a great breeder she knows a lot about the breed! just email me and i will give you her number.... ok like some are saying i would not try the internet there are a lot of scams on this breed out there! and don't get them from a pet shop they are usually not very good temperaments. they do cost a lot and you have to make sure you keep them in good health and take good care of them. yes like the guy on the bottom gave a long list of stuff that is only if you got a bully that doesnt have good health to begin with... and you can find a good vet that isnt that expensive one of my bullies got stung in the neck by a wasp and had a reasction to it and it was like 175 to take him to the vet... the food we feed ours is only $35 a bag and its a 50 lb bag! and it is for english bulldogs!
