The odds of a dealer making a hand with any give up card is 71.64%. Those odds go up to anywhere from 74.01% to 88.35% if the dealer is showing a 7 through Ace. The players odds of busting a 12-16 are 31%-62%. Looking at it this way you can see your odds of busting are lower than the dealers odds of making a hand, so it makes sense to hit your hand.
Example: You have 15, the dealer is showing a 10. If you hit you will make your hand better 42% of the time. The dealer will make a hand with a 10 showing 78.57% of the time. By not hitting you are going to loose 78.57% of the time. You aren't going to win every time to hit a 15 against a 10, but you will increase your odds.

If you have 12 to 16, and the dealer has a good up card (7, 8, 9, 10, A), chances are you will lose if you stand.
Taking a hit at least gives you a chance to improve your hand.
This is why you should surrender a 5 or 6 (if it's allowed). At least you'll only lose half your bet.

Well, it depends on what the dealer has. If the dealer has a 7,8,9,X or A showing (X means any 10 value card), then you are pretty much screwed either way, but the odds are slightly less against you if you hit than if you stand. Basic Strategy exists because people have simulated millions of hands using computers to see what the odds are over the long run, and basic strategy is what was produced. While you are going to get burned from time to time, in the long run, you will lose less money hitting on those stiff hands against a strong dealer upcard than standing on them.

Take in a couple of factors - Is the dealer Filipino? Are we playing single deck or a 7 deck shoe? Are you drinking alcohol? Have you been losing? Chances are, you should stay. I like to force the dealer to beat me, rather than bust with a face card, especially if I'm the anchor guy at the end of the table.

blackjackinfo.com for actual statistical tables
the numer of decks may impact the data slightly
anyhow, if thats how you feel, and you actually may be right, dont feel pressured to hit UNLESS the dealer or opponent has a face card
