Why did Afghan PM Hamid Karzai shake hands with Laura Bush when Islam forbids a man to do this with a woman?

This is conjecture, because I know little about Islam, but either:

1. You are taking the verse that says so out of context.
2. He believes you are taking the verse out of context.
3. He doesn't care thta Islam says he shouldn't do that.
4. He forgot that Islam says that.
5. He wants to be polite and shake hands with people to adapt to their culture.

I'm sure that are other possible reasons, but that's enough for now!

Perhaps he was being diplomatic, and understood that as Laura Bush is not Muslim, she would not understand if he refused to shake her hand, and might even be offended by the refusal. Diplomacy leads to peace.

Not all muslims do that. Many Muslims do shake hands with members of the opposite sex.
