Unless you were planning to swim. I had a friend who hitch-hiked from Poland to the UK. They still made him pay his fare for the Ferry :)

Before I became a bus driver I hitch-hiked everywhere. In the 70's it was usually quicker than taking the bus and a whole lot more interesting. Times have changed. Now it's only for those with a sense of adventure and bags of patience, or if you are with someone you can enjoy being with regardless of whether anyone stops. I tried my luck hitching with a female from Amsterdam to the South of France two years ago just to see how things were and it took us a week and we only managed that cos she was Slovakian and asked Slovakian trucks in service areas if they would take us.

The best way to go free on the ferry is to go with a truck. Trucks are allowed to take two drivers but rarely have more than one driver, but they might lose their job by taking you.

I would be very suprised if you got to your destination cheaper than a bus if you take into account the food you will eat while waiting up to three days for a ride as we did in France two years ago! Good luck, don't let me put you off!

you could always try walking the tunnel! but as a general rule most commercial ferries don't let people on for nothing so yes you will need to buy a ticket, if you get that far.

unless you hid in the car and managed not to be seen, wouldn't be too hard to do but would be a lot of hassle for you if you were caught, being detained, interrogated etc...hardly worth it - the cost of a foot passenger ticket is negligable anyway

Dont you pay for the car not the people init? If you were hitch hiking and got in to a car that had paid you would be ok.
