My mom is 64 & has been steadily declining in memory & behavior since 1990 or so. She's visiting me from back east & I'm wondering if she's losing it!

Here's some of the stuff she's been doing & only getting worse:

**She constantly repeats herself. If you remind her, she'll just keep going & tell you not to listen or ignore her
**She talks about the past whenever she opens her mouth
**She has about 5 subjects that she talks about & won't come into the "present" without going back into the "past"
**She will provoke arguments & then pretend like she did nothing wrong or change the subject immediately
**She'll ask for something and then say "never-mind".
**She won't walk to the corner by herself out of some "fear" but won't say what it is.

She is a staunch Christian, however, and can engage you in religion, Jesus, or the bible like Freud or Einstein.

What GIVES?

Many people with dementia and early Alzheimers can remember almost everything from the distant past, but their short term memory is poor. Short term memory loss explains almost everything on your list.

However, there are other things that can cause these symptoms. She needs to see three doctors: her primary physician for a complete physical, a neurologist to test her memory and other physical brain issues, and a psychiatrist to determine if there is some sort of mental illness going on. Together they will be able to determine the cause(s) of her problems and perhaps help her.

not weird, around where I'm from, many are mothers at your age already. I'm 20 and have a 2 year old... and I currently have the same desire you do-- to look into the eyes of another child of mine. I could be a hell of a lot more stable, money wise- everyone could always be more stable. I think it would be more of a relationship thing- is your relationship stable? It's a very unique and special experience to be able to create human life, and it's good that you desire this experience, if it's something you truely want, I'd say, go for it! I read a question on here the other day when a 15 year old really really wanted a baby.. I think you're a lot more stable then her (especially emotionally)~ it's totally up to you. My mom had me at 29 (I was her first kid), and while I was going through school, I always had the OLDEST mom out of everyone.. it was weird to me because 29 is actually quite young still! Good luck!

There are forms of memory loss and behaviors called DIMENTIA (dee men sha) Alzheimer's is one of those forms.

Call your local hospital and speak with the social worker.
Ask where you can arrange for Dimentia testing for you mom.
This would be especially needful if you feel she is not capable
of living alone safely....... that her life would be limited or her physical needs not properly met. You mentioned her fear.

Some forms of dimentia, as the person digresses in abilities, can be treated to some extent by medication. This can help so the person does not lose skills or memory quite so quickly. Other medications address the person's behaviors.

Consider getting your mom assessed.
Then talk with the nurse or social worker about where she is now on the scale, and what to expect for her future.
That would lead to a discussion about the level of care that would be required .... if care can be adequately supplied by family, or if her declining condition would require specialty care in a care-home.

It's tough to face these things.
Atleast you've begun to ask the questions.

Try dealing w/a 78 yr. old!! anyways it sounds normal to me from what I've seen. What happens is they don't go out much, or have many funtions they go to so that is their way of getting attention. I don't think any old person likes getting old, so they always talk about what they feel most comfortable with....the past when they did do things. They start to be fearful because of their age & how vulnerable they feel. When she can't engage you in religion anymore, that's when I'd start to worry. Just humor her & give her the attention she's looking for so you don't regret it when she's gone. Good Luck

Good observations. Good questions.
I'd get hold of someone she lives with or is close to and ask these questions of that person. You may be observing the earliest stages of Alzheimer's Disease. On the other hand, you may be seeing a medication reaction to something she's taking. You can be discrete and still let the people you are asking your questions know you are concerned about her. They have no reason to be upset with you. You may be confirming what they have been seeing and can't explain. Good luck...

It may be the beginning stages of dementia, which, if caught early enough can be treated (I believe, I may be wrong). Why don't you try taking her to a doctor?

People aren't conscious of how they're acting - only those around them like yourself. Clap your hands abruptly and your mom will come to her senses. Works all the time.
