What is it with these people? Don't do a lot of motorway driving but have just got back from a long distance trip and can't get over these morons. Why don't they realise that they should be in the inside lane unless they are overtaking something? I lost count of the amount of times I had to pull out into the outside lane to pass one of these twits, they obviously don't use their mirrors either!

Oh I am sooooo with you. I've been travelling on the motorway a lot recently and people just get into a lane and stay there - even the outside lane!

We need to reeducate the public about driving properly. However I had this debate with one of my friends and she said she just can't be bothered!!!!!! I could have walloped her there and then.

I think it is just sheer laziness but maybe the police should start pulling these people over and we should have a national campaign. There would be far less queues on the motorway if everyone drove properly. I go home and theres no traffic in the slow lane, some in the middle and most in the outside lane.....

Middle lane hoggers, full stop. Regardless of what speed they're going, they are annooyinggggggg. Maybe they don't know how to, or are afraid to go left. Because of that they are eternally destined to drive aimlessly on the motorway, never getting anywhere. There's actually only three or four people who do this, but because they get nowhere they're still on the road, FOREVER. We all come across the same people, every day. They must be nervous wrecks! I think they are probably the very same people, (and there are LOADS of them), who don't know where the indicators are in the car or they are too flipping lazy to use them. Grrrrrr!

I know what you mean, it is illegal to drive in the middle lane unless you are overtaking and the same rule applies to the outside lane. Unfortunately the police do not seem to be interested in applying the law in this area even though it is one of the most dangerous practices on our motorways. I would hazard a guess that at least 20% of all drivers drive in this dangerous manner. It could and should be stamped out, a £60 fine and 3 points for offenders would soon stop this practice. ... and raise the safety on our roads.

This question really confused me at first. Passing in the middle lane? Then I realized you're not in the USA. Here the middle lane is used for regular speeds, the right lane for the slower folks, and the far left is generally used for passing. Though for some reason in the state I live in we don't drive this way. We all just sort of go 30MPH over the speed limit, and weave in and out of all three lanes passing each other over and over again. It really gets kind of absurd sometimes.

But I sort of know what you mean. For example there will be obvious room to pass someone, and when you make your move....THEY SPEED UP AND BLOCK YOU IN. This has happened so many times that I learned to just floor it. You don't even have to be doing anything disrespectful to the person in front of you, no bumper riding, not even get close to them briefly. You're just driving along and you see that guy is going slower than you want, you change lanes, and they apparently decide they need to force you to drive as slow as they do. And they always slow back down and drift off into the ether after you pass. So it’s really obvious they were just trying to stop you. I've been driving 13 years now and I still don't understand this bizarre phenomena. It’s as irrational as the nuts who think riding your bumper is going to make you drive faster.

I have some ideas that maybe you didn't think of.

The right lane should be for entering and exiting the freeway. The left lane should be for passing. The center lane should be for driving through. You cannot drive in the right lane, it is dangerous. It is difficult to keep track of everyone trying to merge.

Here is another thing you may not of thought of. The right lane is worn out on many roads ( I am in Minnesota) and will jolt you to death. I have noticed many people stay in the left lane because it is much smoother and safer to drive in.

Welcome to the world of motorway morons. Unfortunately it isn't illegal. Stupid, but not illegal.

It's the same with those dumbos (there one who's notorious around here) who stick to the right-hand lane of dual carriageways on the principal that's the lane they will want at the roundabout 3 miles ahead. Our dear old boy dives to that lane as soon as he gets onto the dual carriageway and sits there at 30mph (in a 70 limit) in his Landrover EVERY TIME.
The local police have had words numerous times but so far have been unable to find something to do the old fool for . . .

I think it's the fear of manoeuvring, once they perch themselves in the middle lane, they can just sit there without having to pull out and overtake,It's very rare they overtake anyone already in middle lane, content to just stay there.
As a truck driver for nearly 30 years,I think it's mainly guys. Most women seem to try and use the M/ways as designed

It is often a question of judgement, if I get into the inside lane can I get out again when I overtake that lorry ahead. You would be surprised how often a BMW or Mercedes blocks you in for no reason. We all have our driving faults perhaps you should take a look at your own

I know exactly what you mean. I think the problem is that people are very inconsiderate when they're driving. They only care about themselves and are content to just sit in the middle lane. They dont care about the others behind them.

I was talking about this with a friend in the Highways Agency. He wouldn't tell me much, but he smiled and said "We're well aware of the problem. Watch this space". I think there's going to be a crackdown. Not before time.
