2002 Hyundai Santa Fe was running fine, parked it in the garage, and left an interior light on. The battery ran down. Recharged the battery with an electric charger. Interior and exterior lights, windows, radio, etc., work fine. "Check Engine" light is on. Starter cranks, but engine won't start. Gas tank is full and fluid levels are OK. 31,000 miles on odometer. What's wrong? p.s.: I made the last payment and received the car title in the mail from the bank 2 days ago.

Well, at least we know its not the starter or battery now, so I'm thinking the individual who said its related to the anti-theft system could be right. The easiest answer to this question is to call the service shop at either the dealer or independent shop and see what they think. Cars can be funny, this year I decided to go look at new cars on Saturday and on that Friday my car's transmission decides to die on me...I ended up selling my Maxima for alot less then I hoped, but love my new Hyunda Azera.

Hi What has happened is that your check engine light has come on. This can mean a variety of things, but the safest thing for you to do is to call your mechanic and ask what they suggest. Be prepared for them to ask you about the car (ie. is it making any noises, are you noticing any puddles on the ground under your vehicle? etc). They will tell you either to bring it in at your next service or for your piece of mind to bring it is sooner. They also may have an idea of what the problem is as well. If you are worried about after you called them - bring it in to them - they are professionals and will be able to determine the problem. It could be simple - resetting the light, adding fluid or something a little trickier. I am sorry I can't help more, but I used to work for Ford, and don't know a lot about Hyundais. Good luck! P.S. you might want to call Hyundai and ask for an owner's manual.

Do this first:
Disconnect the battery cables from both posts of the battery.

After 10 minutes, everything electric will reset, with the exception of the odometer. Reconnect the cables and try to start.

If that fails, call Hyundai motor assistance and have your car towed to the nearest dealer. It's still under warranty and it'll be fixed for free.

Good luck.

If your car is still under warranty and hyundai has free roadside assistance so call that # and have it towed to the nearest hyundai dealer. If that is where you bought it they might have loaner cars while your car is being fixed. good luck
