I work as a cashier at Target.
I started two and a half weeks ago, and today I realized how much I dislike it.
It's boring and I'm wasting my time.
School starts in two weeks and I want to quit before then.
I work tonight and am supposed to work for the next five days but I'd much rather not.

I guess my question is, would it be horrible if I called today and quit via telephone? If not, what could I say?
Would they force me to work two more weeks?
Or should I just say I'm going on vacation this Friday for two weeks, because there's no way they'd give me that much time off, so I could quit with an excuse. Though I suppose that would be immature, but who cares? I'm not planning on making this my career..

I've just never had a job before and need advice on how to go back to the lovely days of unemployment I miss so much.

I know the best thing to do is give my two weeks notice, but that is a long time. I'd really rather quit before then.

You're right that you should give two weeks notice. But, if you absolutely cannot stand it for two more weeks I think the best thing to do would be to tell them you would work the five days they have you scheduled for and then you won't be back. Or you could give your two weeks notice and then call in sick. Or don't show up and don't answer the phone when they call.

But you have to think about the future too. Will you need to use this experience as a reference for another job, or, will you be shopping there and have to endure the akward moments with your former co-workers?

You really should give them your two weeks notice. That gives them time to find a replacement for you, and make any adjustments to the schedule that they need to. And youve only been working their for 2 weeks, so they wouldnt expect this yet. Dont quit over the phone, because they can put that on your work record and it will make you look bad.

But they cant force you to work if you dont want to. Nobody can, so I wouldnt worry about that at all. But I would do the right thing. Think of it as if you were the store manager. You had a fully staffed shift, and schedule, then someone just quits, without warning. Now you have to run around and try to find someone to fill in for them until you can hire someone else. But you cant find anyone, so youre either just understaffed or have to do it yourself, which is time out of your day you cant afford.

Even though this is not your career, this is the starting point of what will eventually be your career. Any future employer will call Target & ask for a reference. If they can't give you a positive one or if they are asked and have to tell a potential employer that you're not eligible for rehire, it will have a negative impact on future job searches.

This will follow you around for several more jobs in the future. If you consider leaving it off your resume/application, they will find out & then either not hire you or will terminate you for cause for being dishonest on your application....which will give you another bad reference.

Give two weeks notice, go, be pleasant, give it your best effort & take the money & run.

No you have no legal obligation to return if you don't want to. The only thing is, if you quit without your two weeks' notice or on a dime, you'll most likely get a bad reference from them.. And in the future, when you put this job on your resume and a prospective employer calls them, (cuz they do that :) they'll probably say "Well she quit on a dime" and give a bad impression of you as an employee.. but that's about it.

But honestly, naw. If you want to leave, you can just say you're leaving and you're not legally required to come back. It's nice to give some notice so they can rearrange shifts and make sure they have the staff to pick up your shifts.... if you can, and hey, it's extra money for five days of relative misery..

But it's your call. They can't force you to come in.

If you are in high school or college giving two weeks isn't that important, after all it's a retail job not your career. Just call and quit. I have done it before, when I was younger.
