I guess it depends on what your base lets you do and how they're coming home. I know for DH's sub we've put linens in barracks rooms once. We usually have a welcome home bag of soda and snacks and base information for the single sailors. We also have done cups and magnets with "We survived Deployment 2007" or whatever and a sub graphic for the party.

EDIT: Be careful if you decide to ask for donations. I know our base has really cracked down on how and when you can. If we don't follow the rules exactly we can loose our right to operate an FRG entirely.

A big thing is dont forget the single soldiers. A lot of times at these reunions, the spouses run up to their spouse and the single soldiers mingle in the back and look for escapes.

Make sure everyone has a ride home. In the National Guard, I imagine there may be some that dont have an appartment anymore. They may need rides to hotels.

Contact active duty bases and ask for their FRG or FSG. There is usually a post representative that can help. I am sure there is a state FRG coordinator as well that can help. Also try contacting Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) and MWR on a military base. They can provide you with ideas as well.

Merchants will usually donate items if you ask them, movie tickets, meals, even discounts on cars.

Generally the best thing is to keep the ceremony itself kind of short. I have seen wives try to put on a small concert almost, and it was a good show, they had talent, but the soldiers didnt want to sit through a show.

We went to the bars when we came back from Desert Storm in 91. Other than that....
we got nothing.

All the soldiers should "share" all the women in the FRG! That should be a fitting welcome home!

...stop trying to save everyone its not your job...

this is coming from a woman whos husband is fighting in a war in another country?
Hope he doesnn't come home injured?! You can tell him he should mind his own business though, huh? LOL Anywoman who is being abused by her husband deseres to have someone stick up for her, hope when your hubby gets back he can teach you about fighting for other people.
If he ever happens to be stiiting in a parked car and gets a dui, by the way that stands for DRIVING under the influence he will really deserve to get it stuck to him, right?....God Bless :)

In my area, there were NG units that came home, the whole town turned out to welcome them.
