I have just put two coats of Crown bathroom and kitchen emulsion in the toilet and it's totally uneven and patchy. I don't consider myself a bad painter, so I don't understand why it's still so uneven and marked. I am using a paint brush rather than a roller - might that be the reason why?

Yes, that's part of the reason. And it will take you a lot longer and you will use more paint with a paintbrush than you will with a roller. Use a roller and make sure you use the right thickness of roller. The thickness of the roller will depend on the roughness of the wall. The rougher the wall texture is the thicker of roller you will need. At many paint stores they will have a wall texture sample near the roller thickness.

If you still have trouble, try cleaning the walls first by wiping them down. Sometimes if there has been smoke in the room the paint won't want to stick to the wall.

Yes, use a brush only for cutting in the corners and painting around trim. get a roller with a thin nap ( about 3/8") to paint the walls. Also use a good base coat primer before you paint. Your best bet is to lightly sand the wall you've been painting and go over it with a roller.

Yes. Try a roller. They come in all sizes if you need to use a smaller width.

If you are mixing two colors together, this might be your problem too.
