I don't like the word, "star" myself but I think you could be an "asset" by knowing more about what others do. I'm in a job where I have the opportunity to cross-train and help others outside of my own postion. This gives me more rounded knowledge of the department/company as a whole. Offer to help out (as long as you have your own work completed). Ask for special project (hopefully they're not junk). I was given a couple of projects and it let me try my own creativity. They gave me the ball and I ran with it. It works well if you have an employer that does't abuse your willingness to help.

Go above and beyond what is asked of you. If you finish your work then seek other projects or responsibilities. Always be willing to learn other things. Don't get hung up on "that's not my job." No matter how trivial a task, it has to get done. That is a biggggg turn off to bosses when an employee says that. Can cost you promotions and raises, trust me, I've seen it happen to a number of people. I would bet you do not know everything in the department, but keep an open mind to learn new things. Be helpful, offer assistance when needed to other co-workers or to your boss without having to be asked.

You won't be a star if you want to be a know it all. It's only when you commit to being of service to others that you become a star.
Be attentive to details. Know your product/service inside and out. Go beyond the minimum of what is required of you. Arrive early to work and be one of the last to leave. Keep a neat work area. Dress neatly. Be of assistance to others even if not in your work description.
Do this and you will be a super star at work.

Knowing everything doesn't make you a star. Anyone can find out how to do something if they don't currently possess the knowledge. Helping others to become better (or as knowledgeable as you) and having a positive attitude EVERYday is what makes you a 'STAR'.

Be the person, that if someone gives you something to do, they never have to think about it again.
It means they can depend on you to do things right, and do it right the first time.
