I have worked 8 yrs in dentistry & now work for a cardiologist (heart doc). I see no problem with you getting a tatoo behind your ear or elsewhere. I have worked with all types of dentist & doctors, some with tats, some with long hair, some with bleached hair, & some very conservatives. A tatoo will not change you on the inside & it will not make you a bad physican. If you are only 15 yrs old maybe you should wait a year or two since you are having doubts. If you decide to go ahead with it then I'm sure your future patients won't mind as long as you give them great care!! Good luck!!

1. I am never sure why someone would get a tattoo they cannot easily see or share with others. It seems to be a waste of money and creative spirit.
2. I am not a fan of children or teens with tattoos- this is a pretty permanent thing to do and few of us under about 20'ish really had the perspective needed to make permanent changes to our bodies. To put it another way- there are a lot of adults running around the world who regret things they did when they were your age, but cannot easily fix now.
3. Tats as 'mainstream culture' seems to be more of a fad than a real cultural change. There are signs that the fad is already dissipating a bit. If it really is a fad, then the problem is that most of the time, we are embarassed by our participation when the fad becomes passe'.
4. If employers, interviewers, and customers won't see it, I don't see that it matters.

Tattoos are become so common now that I dont' think people 5-6 years from now are going to frown on it as much as they might today. I would wait until you are in your twenties to get the tattoo though so you'll know exactly what you want and it won't be something you wanted on a whim.
I think eventually it'll be sort of like women having ears pierced. No one will pay any more attention to tattoos than they do to women with earrings.

Well first off, if you are here in the USA, the age of getting a tatoo I believe is 18, of course depends on the state. Getting a tattoo does make people jump to conclusions. They won't care who you are on the inside because they won't want to get to know you. If you are going to be a pediatrcian parents might not want you to be near thier kids becuase they will assume that you aren't a nice person or perhaps you break the rules, etc. Affecting you on getting a job, it may, it may not. If you do well in school, it shouldn't matter. 4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, 2 years internship/residency...Then of course you can open up your own practice. Best idea, is get a tattoo that is not normally seen when you are working. Mine is on my right upper arm. That is covered by my uniform when I work. No one wants to see a cop with a non-military tattoo, believe me.

You have 3 years to figure it out.
Personally, I'm not a fan of tats on the neck, face or head, especially in the professional workplace (like mine). Professionals with tats will all agree, if you get a tat, be able to hide it...it could affect your potential clients.

tattoos are much more accepted in our society today than they were just a few years ago. I seriously doubt that having a tat behind your ear will hinder your career in any way shape or form. Go for it!

Some people will always have a problem with it - as long as you are good at what you do a small tattoo behind your ear shouldn't matter - but to some it will.
My doctor has tattoos and the bank manager where I do my banking has piercings. (Everything you can pierce below the neck - she is a freak beneath her clothes.)

It depends on who you are inside as a person, not on the outside. I work in a very professional atmosphere and I have so many tats I have lost track. No one judges me. Most of my tattoos are visible. Be yourself.

You may be better off waiting, it shouldn't affect a career choice, but some people are bothered by [looking at] tattooes.

My best friend is a pharmacist (she is a doctor of pharmacology) and has lots of tattoos. They would rather have someone smart with a tattoo than an idiot without one.
