Yep, as everyone said, a packing list will be put out in the weeks before a deployment. But my husband has been over twice, and there are other "needs" that are not on the packing list. Games, movies, microwaves, TVs, etc. I dont think my husband could survive a deployment without his entertainment! Lots of stuff can be purchased from soldiers over there who are redeploying though.
So yeah, ruck, number of pairs of socks, personal hygiene items, number of tshirts, etc etc will be on that packing list. Those other "needs" wont be, so tell him to check with other soldiers to see what else he might bring.

I did not get any packing list when I got mobilized. I called the point of contact for the command that I would be assigned to and asked what I needed to bring.

before he leaves he will go to several briefings and come home with lots of info for you and packing list for himself, most of it is stuff he already has, things that YOU can get to make deployment easier , if he doesnt already have one a laptop, webcams, skype phones, use instant messenger, being able to stay in touch with my DH has helped me so much.

Yes we get a packing list wheneva we go out of our home station. now to go to a place like Iraq, its very important to take some stuffs that are not on the packing list, e.g clippers, batteries, portable dvd player etc

Yes, they do. He may also want to talk with a few experienced guys to see what they recommend in addition to the official list.
