The French from France would put a different twist on it.
Comment s'est passée ta journée?
As-tu passé une bonne journée?

For someone you are less familiar with:
Comment s'est passée votre journée?
Avez-vous passé une bonne journée?

Literally:
How did your day go?
Have you had a good day?

(Canadian French is getting increasingly anglicised.)

jan.marie - you've obviously hung out in the wrong places in Montreal (whose French is more anglicized than anywhere else in the province). ''Comment était ta journée?'' is carbon copy from English, ''how was your day?'' and is not French.

In French we would say:

- As-tu passé une belle/bonne journée?
- Comment s'est passée ta journée?

And if you wanted to add ''at work'' or ''at school'' you would say respectively:

- As-tu passé une belle journée au travail/à l'école?
- Comment s'est passée ta journée au travail/à l'école?

or even more colloquial:

- C'était comment aujourd'hui? (au travail/à l'école?)

But I wouldn't use the latter.

Wise Owl:

French Canadians (at least those who are aware of anglicism) will use the same phrases as the French from France. I have never used, ''comment était ta journée?''.
