My first and best response is to ask your instructor. The book that he or she teaches from is going to make both of you the most comfortable. If tht is not an option. The Essential Elements for Strings 2000 has both a DVD with basic holding media, and a CD to play along with. It has most of the basics and will get you started.

I also like the ALL FOR STRINGS method put out by Alfred, but it does not have the DVD.

If I can be of any further assistance, just give me a shout.

As far as a beginners Violin, I really like the Cremona Vl150 or 175. You can find other ones locally, and again I would ask your instructor first and always, but if that is not an option, try Folk of the Wood dot com

they have a variety of beginner instruments for cheap. I bought the Franz Hoffman Prelude violin outfit for $160. It is an extremely well made student instrument. (My string professor bought one for his daughter after seeing it.) They also have try-out and trade-in policies. Make sure you know the details before you order.
About the book. It depends on what you are doing. If you are playing in a group then ask your director what book to use. If you are planning on learning privately then I recommend Suzuki Violin School Volume 1 with the corresponding CD. All of my teachers and other professional violinists I know use this for their beginners. I strongly recommend getting a private teacher if you want to be successful. The violin is not a good self-teaching instrument.

The 1st Violin Suzuki book. My sister used to have that one, and the cello one, and I had the one for viola, and both include many of the same songs. The pieces are nice, and it's done in such a straightforward manner that my sister's been able to pretty much teach herself the cello.

i aggree with milanclad
go suzuki.

i find it straightforward...but you will need a teacher... or at least i think so.

the suzuki method is a method in which you learn to play by rote, or sight... you initally don't read music, but if you can read already, go for it!

southwest makes a 136 dollar violin... its the hans kroger prelude...
the hans kroger maestro is 329 dollars.. better for advancing players....

make sure you dont use sensitive..rather, use dominant strings...

Two older, but tried and true books are:

Mueller - Rusch

Stringbuilder

They may be in a more modern edition at this time, but I started with them and they worked quite well.

I would suggest going to a music store and checking with them. The one here had a very nice one for my daughter and even took payments. This was a real blessing for us. They will often have used instruments there for sale.
