The only difference between an "LED" screen and a "LCD" screen is the back light. They both use Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels to create the picture. The ones called LCD use a compact fluorescent tube to provide the light which shines through the display. These are not able to produce true black, it's always slightly dark grey. The ones called LED use rows of Light Emitting Diodes to produce the back light. These give a much better contrast because the blacks are true black. So generally the picture is better than the one where a single bulb illuminates the screen. You had a scratch on visible surface. That is the LCD panel itself. This would not affect the back lighting system so that part would not have been changed when the fault was repaired. What you had fitted was a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen. It will be identical to the one taken out. Apart from anything else, a different designed one wouldn't fit and the electrical connectors would also be different. The software is not the issue. I expect that you did not talk to an "engineer" either, it was probably just a "front desk" or delivery person. A qualified technician would not have given you such a vague and inaccurate answer.

The short answer is 'there aren't any good quality 32" LCDs under £400'. The long answer is that while good quality is out of your price range, adequate quality isn't.

The only 32" under £400 I'd recommend is the Sanyo CE32LD81-B. It's not amazing, but is an acceptable option at that price.

If you're prepared to add an extra £50, the market opens up. Sharp and Hitachi both have models in that price rage, and they are vastly superior LCDs. I'd go with Hitachi over Sharp, but Sharp has been doing very well recently.

You have collected a good set of answers, but I would strongly advise that you buy from a supermarket, ASDA or TESCO. If you have ANY problems in the 1st year, they will REFUND your money almost certainly without any hassle at all. Morrison's will have an old lady on the customer desk and will try and give you a credit note. Sainsbury will treat you like a thief... - whatever Sainsbury or Morrison's do well, it ain't customer service - and will never be price. Dixons, curry's comet, etc; will turn their back from the moment you leave the shop. Good luck.

You can't.

You can buy a poor quality one for less than £400 from a supermarket or Argos, or you can spend a couple of hundred pounds more, for something decent - your choice.

Remember, "Buy cheap, buy twice".

Check out a few online sellers. Exchange rate is in your favor for US sellers, however not sure if they'll ship internationally.
