I don't mind aging, but the idea that at some point I will be unable to care for myself is unpleasant.
Thoughts of death don't scare me nearly as much as the thought of being unable to wipe my own bottom.

Sadly, society has a lot to do with this. We are bombarded from every form of media to look a certain way. And, too many people are conformists who follow along with it.
I look forward to aging with each passing year. The wrinkles I develop will be signs that I have lived and experienced life. And as you said, wisdom is the best thing about getting older. With each day I live, I learn something new.

I agree that aging does bring wisdom and experience...but it also brings things like arthritis, memory loss, sight loss, and more.

My take on it is that aging is most fearful for people that focus on physical beauty and abilities. If you believe that your worth comes from your beauty or from your physical abilities, then it is quite natural to fear aging that robs you of your clean, unlined skin or your ability to run fast, jump high, or whatever! It has to be scary for a person that has always been revered because of their physical characteristics to see those characteristics slipping away. Yes, the wisdom and experience are far stronger and more lasting, but is it scary for some people to think that they will be viewed through that lens when they spent so much time focusing on developing the physical (sometimes at the expense of the mental/spiritual).

Some folks just don't take much stock in wisdom. Also, they believe the most important thing is 'beauty'. They fail to recognize that to a great many people what is on the inside, the kindness, wisdom, joy, etc., are of far greater significance then mere physical appearance.

Because of the value that is placed on beauty and virility, which seem to be ideal in younger people.

I love the wisdom and perspective I have gained, but I miss the way I looked before I had children.

Because it's the big UNKNOWN.

Aging and death are inevitable factors in our lives. The mystery is how we are going about this process.

In large, society plays a major role in how we view growing older. Are we getting wiser, or are we going to be a burden on society?

Especially is the USA, they are afraid of aging because the
next step is death. They don't know what will happen to them
after death. I'm growing old gracefully and looking forward to
death as a door to see my Savior, face to face. Jesus Christ
the Lord of All.

we in the u.k look forward to getting fatter . heart disease a stroke or any myriad of illness . let down by a joke of a government . those without family left to battle on their own, struggling to the post office to draw a measily pension in which to try and drag out an exsistence in this incredibly expensive country ,
this is said rather tonge in cheek but it may be one way to see it.

What's a waddle? Is that next to the love handles? I hear they sell great waddle cream. Of course it is in the waddle aisle, next to the old standby, sexy turtlenecks! Grow a beard anyone? lol Your avatar looks great to me...maybe clean your glasses or get glasses!
