Like indicated above, it depends on your skin types an issues; invigorating is good if you have moderate to severe acne problems; however, it you don't using it only seems to aggravate the problem.
If you have moderate to little breakout problems, using St. Ives gentle Apricot Scrub 1-2 times a week can keep zits at bay and keep your complexion fresh.

This is depending on your skin type because everyone has a different skin type. If you find that you can be sensitive to harsh products then of course gentle is better FOR YOU... if you can tolerate a lot of different skin products than opting for the vigorating one would be a good choice.
If you're not sure, then visit a dermatologist or go to macy's at the clinique counter, I'm sure they would be kind enough to tell you how your skin is ..

It would depend on your skin type. If you have sensitive skin or irritate skin, go with the gentle. If you are like me and your skin can take stuff, do the invigorating. If you use products that work WITH your skin, you are going to get much better results! If your not sure, maybe try both, each for a few weeks, and see which works best for YOU!

I would go with the gentle first, then if you feel you need something stronger, go with the invigorating.
If you want to exfoliate, you can even try the ROC demabrasion cleansing discs they are gentle and they work wonderfully.
