I have a friend who can't seem to deal with someone talking about anyone other than her. If a topic comes up, she's the first to cut someone off and start a running commentary about her doing/experiencing the same thing, etc. She's otherwise a nice person but can't seem to stop talking about herself/her kids/etc. whenever other people are around.

If there's a polite way to deal with someone who's that self-centered, how to go about it? (She doesn't do it when it's one-on-one conversations; only in a group.)

She probably thinks she's just contributing to the conversation/relating to others. So go easy on her. Just say "Uh huh," then direct attention back to the original person. Hopefully she'll get the hint.

Example.
Jessica, did you have fun camping this weekend?
Yeah, I did.
(other girl) Oh my gosh, the first time I went camping, it was so funny. I had never set up a tent before, and I tried to pitch it inside out! Everyone was laughing so hard, it took us forever to get it set up.
(you) Oh wow. (Back to Jessica) Where did you guys go? Was it cold up there?

Etc. Just keep doing it till she gets it.

Wait till she finishes her sentence, smile at her, then turn back to the other people you were talking to and resume your conversation.

From personal experience, I can tell you that this method is quite effective.

People like this often have no idea they do it. I usually politely draw their attention to it by saying something like, "Sue, let Janice finish her story." The more they hear things like this, the more they realize they always jump in with their own story ALL THE TIME.

Say "Okay...and back to me." or some other equally witty way of saying "shut up."
When being subtle does not work, I eventually choose to stop being around that person. All they do is suck energy from everyone else.

Each time she starts monopolizing the conversation with "her"....change the subject.

If you keep doing it after awhile, unless she's an idiot she'll get the message.
