You did not mention from where? Many foreign countries require a passport and possibly a visa to be allowed into Canada.

I see everyone assumes you are from USA, and in that case you need a passport to FLY in (or at least have a birth certificate and proof that you applied for the passport up until September 2007).

If you are coming into Canada by LAND, you should only need a passport starting in June 2008.

Please note that these requirements are from the US Department of Homeland Security. They are not Canada Customs requirements. On the Canada Customs website, they clearly indicate:

"...If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID...."

What this means is that a US citizen can get into Canada without a passport, but getting back in to the USA may take longer if you do not have a passport to use to get past Homeland Security.

If your flying into Canada, you do. If your driving, you don't but you will need some form of ID such as a birth certificate and/or drivers license. The answers that are telling you need a passport to drive are WRONG. It's AIR TRAVEL that now requires passports, NOT land travel. You won't need passports for land travel until 2008.

From the U.S. State Department:
"The Departments of State and Homeland Security announced today that the requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by > air < from any part of the Western Hemisphere will begin on January 23, 2007."

"A separate proposed rule addressing land and sea travel will be published at a later date proposing specific requirements for travelers entering the United States through land and sea border crossings. As early as January 1, > 2008 <, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea could be required to present a valid passport"
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2006/76752.htm

So, as you can see, you currently don't need a passport for land travel. You do need a birth certificate and/or drivers license to enter the U.S. and return to Canada, but a passport is NOT required.

If you're traveling by air then yes, you'll need a passport.

By land/sea you're only required to have gov't issued id (e.g. a driver's licence) and proof of citizenship (e.g. birth certificate).

But a passport is always good to have to prevent any possible hold ups at the border.

You need a passport to cross even if you are driving, unless you are crossing at Niagara Falls, only a birth certificate is required there.

No. Until a few weeks ago it was required, but the U.S. government has waived the requirement for U.S. citizens to have a passport to enter Canada because too many people were applying and it created a huge backlog of applicants. It's only a temporary waive.
