this employer has walked everyone out the door right then and there if they gave a 2 week notice so i beat him to the punch. also i got a 3 dollar increase per hour at the new job plus benifits i did not have with this company

yes, ok

it's not mandatory to give notice, but if you can it's preferable that you offer a two weeks notice, and that way you can part in good terms, and they can be a good reference if you ever needed one

in this case, since you already have a job, then good for you :)

If you're an "at will" employee, no notice or reason is required for you to quit. Likewise, they could fire you at any time with no notice or reason. If you have a contract, the terms of your leaving will be dictated by the contract.

That said, it is not professional to leave a job with no notice. You'll burn bridges and lose any good favor you many have had there. You may need a good word from this former employer as a reference one day. It will also make a better impression to your new employer if you tell them, "I would love to start sooner, but I feel a responsibility to give my current employer two weeks' notice." Your new employer will have a more positive view of your character.

And it doesn't hurt to ask when you give your notice. Perhaps your current employer doesn't require two weeks (or two full weeks) and you will be free to start earlier while making a positive impression on both your former and your new employer.

As most everyone else has said, Its not ok to quit without giving notice. Nor is it requred by law either. But it is the right thing to do. As an example, 4 years ago my wife quit a job, gave the two weeks notice like she felt she should. 4 years later she is back working for that same company again. Had she not given notice and just flat out quit. There is no way she would be allowed back at that company. Don't burn bridges, you may never know when you need to walk back over them.

2 Weeks Notice is a courtesy, not a requirement of law. (AFter all, you can be fired without notice, so why not allow people to quit withoutnotice?)

The question then is if you SHOULD. Yes, you should always give notice. Chances are that your company will not keep you on for the full 2 weeks, but it does give them a chance to get someone hired and have YOU traine them (if needed.

In addition, you show your NEW company that you are professional and know the value of the Company/employee relationship.

Always OFFER to stay for 2 weeks, but don't expect to be given the full 2 weeks.

NOt a good Idea makes you look like you can leave at any time. Try to give at least 2 weeks notice. If the job is in the bag That should be no problem. What a re they going to do fire you? You already have the other job if they do.

2 weeks notice is not manditory. There is no law stating that you must give notice prior to leaving a job. Its a courtisy, something you do so your current employer has the time to find a replacement. If you are going to give 2 weeks notice give yourself some time off before you start your new job. Generally you have to wait 6 months before you get vacation time. So build in some personal time before you start your new job, if you can afford it.

No, not really. It's not right ethically (IMO) to just walk off of a job with no notice. If you do so, you want to make sure not to use them as a reference on future jobs as you won't get a very good report.

And, if you signed any type of contract, you may even have legal issues if you do not give notice or stay at that job a minimum amount of time.

NO NO NO!!! It is never okay to quit a job with no notice. You will need to explain to your new employer you need a week, at least to finish out your old job. They should understand. I am sure they would not appreciate some one just up and leaving them with no notice.

You should always give at least two weeks notice before moving on. It is not professional to quit with no notice. If you do so, your new employers may think you would do the same to them.

i guess it depends- but if you already have a new job lined up , i'm not sure how you can give notice unless you clear it with the new job first- if you are working at a deadend job while looking for your real job , then i would quit on the spot. however, if you are leaving one good job to move up to another better job, dont burn your bridges, quit the right way and give 2 wks notice

It is OK to leave without notice, but you will burn some bridges.

If there is one thing I learned during my career is to NEVER burn any bridges. Leave your old job on a good note, with two weeks notice. It might help you down the road in your career
