My son is 12 and im thinking of transfering im from his pediatrician to a regular GP.
i have 2 main reasons for this
1. i really don't like his pediatrician. When we first started seeing her she was great. extra attentive, always available to answer questions. etc.
but now ,12 years later , her practice has grown so much that i think she getting a little "big for her britches" as they say.
most of the time we go we dont even see her, only the NP.
along with a few other things.
2. he's a 12 year old boy, he's going through physical and mental changes that i think a male doctor would be better with handeling, and i don't think he's comfortable seeing his"baby doctor" anymore.

what do you think?

All my kids (1 son and 2 daughters) stopped seeing their pediatrician in 4ms! (after their 18th birthday) but we weren't in a situation that you were in. There are 4 doctors in the practice: my son sees a male doctor and my girls see a female doctor. The office is split into two sides: one side from 0-12yrs and the other side for 12+yrs. I do know where you are coming from though. I took my son to the doctor about 4yrs ago for his physical and the female doctor walked in. He flipped. I think as we all grow up, we all get tired of sitting on those ducky, smiley faced and elmo faced medical paper.
I would go and find a male doctor for your son that has a lot of teenage patients. My regular doctor has like 2 which was one of the reasons why I never switched my girls to her. I felt that though she is a doctor and could certainly answer my daughters' questions, she didn't work a lot of teenagers and have a sense of where they were at in life beyond medicine.

My son, who is now 20, saw his pediatrician until he was 17. The situation was a little bit different though. There were more than one doctor in the practice which were both male and female. He saw the female when he was younger and the male after about the age of 10. They suggested the change because they understood that he would probably be uncomfortable. I kept him there because it was a wonderful group of professionals that he was comfortable with.

Ask him how he feels about it and make a decision together.

He can see the pediatrician until he is 18, but if you aren't happy with her there is no reason why he can't go to a GP. My kids both see a GP instead of a pediatrician. If there is a problem then they can always refer you to a specialist.

We have 4 boys aged 5, 8 ,10 and 12 yrs. Our older two, go to our GP the younger two still to their paediatrician. A few years ago they all went to a GP, as we lived in a remote area that did not have a paediatrician.
At 12, I would definitely change to your GP.

Although many pediatricians will see kids until they are 18, it sounds like it is time for your son to see a family doctor now.

My daughter went to her pediatrician until she left for college at 18 years old.

She was still comfortable going there.

it sounds like you already know what you need to do! if you are unhappy with current doc i would try to make a change for the better. it will probably be better for him in the long run to.
