An 8th grade boy likes girls in two ways:
1) He likes a girl, because he knows he can get some, and then he can move on to the next one.
2) He really likes a girl... he's nervous around her, he wouldn't be able to get enough nerve up to ask her out or to make a move on her. He wouldn't want anyone else to make a move on her. He puts her on a pedestal and tries to be friends with her. He knows that the only way to keep her is by friendship. He knows once he has her, he won't respect her.
Always try and be the second kind of girl. She gets less action in middle and highschool, but she'll get more proposals when the easy girls are sitting around wondering why no one wants them after a few dates.

I don't see that as much as an age gap. Why wouldn't he like her? He may actually find something in her that he can click with. There may be chemistry, attraction, and they may have a whole lot in common.
