I personally prefer Hong Kong more. However, I find Tokyo and Hong Kong are very similiar. Both are expensive, crowded, and lots of beautiful neon signs. Japanese technology is more advanced but the food in Hong Kong is definitely better!!
I would choose Hong Kong!
P.S - The person with the name Carl the truth or something with the comment about being a communist country with no freedom and police looks at black or white, that guy's comment is severly wrong.

It depends on what you want to see. Hong Kong is an exotic city with an amazing skyline. Food is everywhere, shopping is plentiful, and nothing can get as more Chinese than Hong Kong. Life is hectic, but the buildings are all modern and towering. Cuisine is world famous, and you can spend hours wandering the streets as the iconic storefront signs loom overhead. There are some historical sights, but not enough to make Hong Kong famous for them. The people are quite busy and noisy, exhibiting the well-known Cantonese personalities of being straightforward. Tokyo is a megacity that is packed densely with buildings. Everything is orderly and organized, and is the epitome of a clean metropolis. Restaurants are plentiful, and there are many shops varying in size. People walk briskly, but calmly, and are everywhere. There are more cultural sights than Hong Kong, but are distanced and are divided by distinct districts. Japanese people are very formal and quiet, something that makes the size of Tokyo more manageable.

between the 2, personally, i would choose tokyo. i am assuming that you are a first time traveller to both places. if you do your research before hand, tokyo is a great place to go to. If you are doing minimal advanced planning, hong kong might be better. reason: english is more widely understood in hong kong than in tokyo, so it'll be easier for you to get directions and even recommendations. eg. some HK cabbies are more than happy to tell you where you should go and food you should try.

I'm from Philippines and been here in HongKong/China for 7 years now. Chinese are great people, don't have any problem yet with the police - ever. I even forgot that this is a communist country.
Hong Kong is a great place to stay and so with Tokyo.

Both cities are very similar in terms of transportation efficient and energy in the city. Of course, technology wise, Tokyo is better because Japan is a major technology product exporter and commit to develop higher level of technology. Shopping wise, Hong Kong is better because major retailers are opening business there to catch the opportunities of Mainland Chinese tourists flooding into the city. So to me, both cities has its advantage and it depends whats you look for

well they're both brilliant and exciting cities. but unless you know the local language, it'll be a bit hard to really experience the local life.
presonally i prefer hong kong, hong kong is full of energy and culturally diverse, from experience it is a much more interesting city for those who aren't local as compared to tokyo
but that's just me.. good luck for whatever reason you asked.

they're really quite different if you dont count electronics and high rise buildings and stuff. I've lived in HK my whole life but i've been to Tokyo 3 times..they are both great. HK is better for shopping though...i find the style in Japan a bit strange. Food is great in both places, you can get worldwide cusines in HK but really good ramen noodle shops in Tokyo, which open at midnight, the atmosphere there is really nice. :)

Without a doubt, Tokyo. I've been to Hong Kong. They are now communist, and you have less freedom there. If you're white or black, the police keep an extra eye on you. It was'nt a very friendly place.
