There are some instances where the groomsmen are the ushers. This happened in a wedding my bf and I were just in. He and another groomsmen took everyone to their seats. But this was a very casual occasion. More formal weddings have men that are specifically there to seat people-ushers. If you and your man have a lot of male friends that you want to include in your day but are not close enough to be a groomsmen or there isn't enough room, this would be a great idea.

Ushers are sometimes seperate, but sometimes the groomsmen do double duty.
At my brothers wedding, they didn't plan on using ushers and realized only the day of the wedding that they really needed them. As a reslut, two of the groomsmen (including me) got pressed into service as ushers too.

Technically they are 2 different groups, some times when you have really large weddings they will have ushers specifically to seat guests but that don't stand at the front of the church. WE just used our groomsmen to seat people.

An usher seats the guest for the wedding whether it be on the brides side or the grooms side. Groomsmen stand with the groom up in front of the church and escort the bridesmads down the aisle and they are part of the wedding party...

An usher is someone who escorts guest to their seats at the ceremony (based on whos family they are) a groomsman is part of the wedding party itself, their job is to help the groom on the day of the wedding to get ready and even sometimes calm him down! They also are the escorts of the bridesmaids.
Hope this helped best wishes!
