Photoshop is expensive (actually $649 from Adobe https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?view=ols_cat&catType=DIGITALIMAGING#loc=en_us&rangeUpper=6%2C0%2C65%2C0&HTMLVerRedirect=true&returnURL=%2Fcfusion%2Fstore%2Fhtml%2Findex%2Ecfm%3Fstore%3DOLS%2DUS%26event%3DdisplayCatalog%26catalogOID%3D1647977&view=ols_cat&catType=DIGITALIMAGING&viewName=Adobe%20Store%20%2D%20North%20America&store=OLS-US&pageNotFound=0 ) because it's really a professional quality program that's the leader of all digital imaging software programs. And since there are many competitors and imitators, its price is about what people believe its worth (unlike virtual monopolies like Micosoft that charge whatever they want).
A less expensive alternative, better suited to non-professionals, is Photoshop Elements ($99 or less) which has many of the same features

A full version of photoshop costs around $500 dollars to urchase. Photoshop elements, costs about half of that and should be all you need unless you're using it on a professional level.

No, Photoshop is far superior to MS Paint . . . it's in a different class altogether. It took a lot of effort to develop and maintain, and Adobe wants to get back their costs. Prices that high are common among professional software like Photoshop and MATLAB. There are free alternatives to most things that work well enough for most non-professionals. Have a look at this software:

Good luck!

Adobe has many programmers and support staff.

You could buy Photoshop Elements for around a hundred dollars or even buy an older version of Photoshop on eBay.

No, its more than just "paint" there is lot more sophistication involves in Photoshop, its geared towards professionals in graphic/web desing. (Pssst, you can download for free in limewire :) but, if you really want to purchase it you can try Photoshop Elements, its a less confusing step down version of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements shouldn't cost you more that $150.

It is a very professional program and even has its own courses on how to learn how to use it. It has become and has been very popular and we all know about supply and demand. If there is a demand for it prices will go up so the company can make more money for this limited application used by many big professionals for graphics.
