Exodus 21:1 -- 21:7
These are the ordinances that you shall set before them:
When you buy a male Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, but in the seventh he shall go out a free person, without debt. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's and he shall go out alone. But if the slave declares, "I love my master, my wife, and my children: I will not go out a free person," then his master shall bring him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost; and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him for life.
Exodus 21:20,21
When a slaveowner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. But if the slave survives a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner's property.

You forget that that is OT and for the Ancient Jews. This has nothing to do with blacks.

Maybe I missed something here... What's the correlation between being a black person & being a Hebrew slave/slave owner?
Oh, wait... The slave thing... Well, obviously slaveowners here in America didn't follow the biblical directives regarding treatment of servants, even though many of them considered themselves Christians (there's a difference between slave & servant, if you didn't know).
But wait, you didn't think that African slavery was particular to America, did you? Of course you realize that Africans owned other Africans long before Americans joined in the trading...
So, what was the question again? Oh yea, now I remember. Possibly because "black people" see the same need for salvation as "white people".

Why don't you write to my Pastor who is black and ask him, or stop by my congregation which is about 40% black and take a random survey http://www.alcf.net
At a guess, I would say that it's because they realize that all have sinned and broken God's laws and deserve to be punished for rebelling against our Creator. Therefore since they don't want to suffer eternal punishment and be separated from the presence of God from whom every perfect and good gift is given, they have decided to repent of their sins and trust in the Lord Jesus for their salvation.
They aren't so ignorant as to read a story from 3,500 years ago about Jewish people who came out of Egypt and to extend what happened back then to what their current situation is or to what sinful men might have done to their ancestors in the past.
How about you? Are you going to face God on judgment day with your only plea being that you read a story in the Bible that didn't quite sit right with you and so He should overlook every time you failed to tell the truth or committed some other sin? If not, then click on the Get Saved button @ http://web.express56.com/~bromar/ because tomorrow is promised to no one and the Bible teaches that it is appointed once for a person to die and after that comes the judgment.

It seems to me God is looking to punish only premeditated murder. God did not invent slavery, men did. God had to work with fallen men and give us directions within our corrupted boundaries. In that time, it was customary to have slaves. God had to give specific indications on what to do when someone murdered a slave. Nothing wrong with that.
When God says "Thou shalt not kill", do you read "It's OK to beat someone near death if he lives"? Stop twisting God's word.

The same reason one from any other race/color would want to be a Christian. It is called God's saving grace thru Christ Jesus.
The Old Testament slavery had nothing to do with color.

Well, since they are talking about Hebrew slaves and Hebrews aren't black, and the admonition is given to Jews, not anyone else, that shouldn't offend my black brothers and sisters too much.

Nice. I wish that more of our african-american bretheren would realize that christianity was a tool of the slave owners to keep the slaves in line and to rob them of thier African heritage and beliefs.

That is the way it was back then, get over it, it is Old Testament and only the Jews would still follow this.
