Hi, my family and I are going to be staying in NJ, and want to spend a day in NYC. A friend suggested to us, that we should drive to Newark, NJ and take the PATH train to get to NYC. We want to go to Manhattan, around Rockefeller Center.

Can anyone explain how exactly to get to NYC starting from Newark, on the PATH, and what transfers we should take?

Also, when we buy our round trip tickets in Newark, is that good for the whole trip on the PATH, or if we have to switch to a connecting train, do we have to pay again? Hope that made sense, lol.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, now I'm even more confused as to what I should do, lol. It seems that maybe taking the NJT might be better, and will have better parking, but what Station, (if not at Newark Penn Station), should we get on at? I should probably add, that we plan to do this on a Sunday afternoon. Thanks again.

If you want to take the PATH, don't drive to Newark. Parking will be tough.

I suggest driving to Hoboken or Jersey City (Exchange Place area).

There are no "tickets" per say for PATH. There is an electronic card. The fee is $1.50 one way.

The closet to Rockefeller Center on the PATH is 33rd and 6th. Rockefeller Center is 47th to 53rd Streets and 6th to 5th Ave. You can either walk the distance from the PATH terminal or take the D train from 34th to Rockefeller Center.

On a sunday afternoon, its not actually that bad to drive into the city and find parking for the day under 20 bucks. Even with tolls, thatd probably be cheaper. Sunday driving in the city is far easier than a weekday.

better still take the NJT train to NY Penn Station. More comofrtable and no transfers ..... Better ride and many NJT lots have parking. PATH does not have lots of parking.

Another way to go to the city that is very pretty is to park at the ferry terminal in Weehawken and take the ferry across. There are shuttle buses from the NY terminal that go across 42nd St, 57 st and 34 st. It is not the least expensive way to go but is the nicest. http://www.nywaterway.com
