Been taking 20mg then upped to 40mg daily for 2 years. I'm convinced it's not working as i'm still depressed, crying and panicky. The doc reckons i should carry on with them, wot do you think?

Do you think an increase in dose again may help?

The maximum daily dose for Citalopram (of which the brand name Celexa) is 40mg daily, and I such an increase in dosage isn't really possible at this time. If this isn't working for you after all this time, then perhaps you could switch medications. Talk with your doctor about other SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), as they are the front line medications for depression.

Also, the newer class of drugs known as SNRI's (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) show promise for individuals with depression and anxiety. It is more geared towards the depressed mood, physical symptoms of depression, and generalized anxiety, but not so much for panic. Cymbalta is of this class of drug, and may offer you the relief you need. Generally, Cymbalta comes in 30mg and 60 mg doses taken once daily, and has shown much promise recently for depressed individuals.

As always, consult your doctor regarding med changes and ask if a change to another SSRI or switching to an SNRI would be your best bet. Do also consider psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy) if you can, as it will alleviate your depression without the need for medications. Good luck!

I think that if the meds aren't working after two years, you have the right to ask your doctor to change the prescription.

Celexa isn't for everyone... and there are other options.

Take care of YOU and talk with your doctor. If he refuses, there are other doctors.. I just can't rationalize taking a drug which does absolutely nothing... they are expensive and it's a waste of time and money taking drugs if they aren't helping.

And it's not fun to feel sad and panicky either, hon.

No way! Go to a different DR! You need to try something else. There are SO many different things out there for different people. If you've been on this drug for 2 years with no REAL change then it's not the correct drug for you. And your Dr. is on crack to just tell you to stick with it for a while! Go to another Dr. these guys just aren't doing there jobs.

Good luck friend!

It works good for me, I recently increased to 60 mg. Everyone is different though. I tried 4 other antidepressants before settling on this one. Maybe you need to try something else.
