Paying cash will get you no more of a discount these days than if you financed it.
Whether the dealer is getting paid-in-full from you or a 3rd party bank/credit union/other financial institution, they are getting their money either way. Plus, if you finance through them, they usually get a kickback on the deal, so they have no incentive to give additional discounts for cash transactions.
Therefore, they will not give you any more of a discount just because you are paying cash upfront.

I will be very surprised if you get any discount at all. Car dealers are hard as nails and cash means no more to them than a cheque or card. The only time to get a discount is when the dealer is trying to sell you the car. If you have done your homework and obtained low quotes elsewhere you can use this to encourage a discount. I take a screen shot of Drive the Deal online (you can't print off the quote) and use this to beat them down. If they don't buckle I move on to another dealer.

Even though sales ads will tell you differently......
It's their job to put you in a new vehicle for as much money as possible (profit for them).
It's your job to get what you want for as little as possible.
Do some research on line. Car Max can be a great resource.....if they carry the make and model. They give their bottom line price on-line.
You can also use Yahoo Autos and price out a car.
Whatever you end up purchasing, don't invest too much emotion....this can cause you to pay more.
Also, walking in with a check is the best way to buy a car. You're now in charge. You don't have to wait on their financing options........
If you're not getting the deal you want, you can always leave that dealer. (Try it after talking with a salesman, they'll do almost anything to keep you there). The longer they can keep you sitting there, the more they're breaking down any inhibitions you have about purchasing a car TODAY.

You will get the discounts everyone else gets. Cash does not matter in the very least. Sometimes, you can actually get the car for less if you finance so the dealer can make their money from the bank.
Ask to pay 1000 under invoice and you'll finance at their rate for 3 months, that way the bank pays them reserve, you pay it off, pay very little in interest, and everyone is happy.
This only works with some dealers.

Why do you think paying cash entitles you to some special deal? The dealer actually makes more money if you finance the car.

I agree with Jay - they make a lot of profit on loans, so don't expect any special treatment. Start with invoice - rebates and work from there.
