I'm looking for a new bike, and I've found a couple that I like but I can't decide which one to get. I'm looking at either the Mongoose Blackcomb or the Mongoose Sector. They're both about the same price, but I'm not sure if one is better than the other. Here are the websites I found them at, and if you could give me any extra info to help me decide which bike to get, that would be great.

Sector
found it at dickssportinggoods.com and sportsauthority.com

I would personally recommend against a bike with dual suspension for this price range. I would suggest that you invest ina hard tail for that price because the components will be better. Maybe go and have a look at your local bike shop and tell then ur situation and see what they say.
Bottom line: Do not get dual suspension unless you are spending 1000 on ur bike

Honest opinion?

They are *$^&^%!!!!!

The problem is that they are trying to do too much. The Shimano gears are OK. Mechanical disc brakes are OK. But do not touch a full suspension bike for less that £700 ($1400). That rear shock is basically a bed spring that will spend most of the time not working and when it does compress/rebound it will cick you in the but.

The frame styles are also designed for down hill, but not very sturdy at that. So you get all of the weight of downhill, but do not have good enough suspension to cope with the rigours.

Judging by the price bracket, you have about $350 to spend. Lets say $400. For that you could get a reasonable machine. The problem is that you are looking for too much, but at a fraction of the cost.

Start by getting a good frame - 6061 alluminium. In this price bracket you will probably get Suntour or RST forks. If you can get Rock shocks or Mazochi, great.

I would also get V brakes and a hard tail frame. This way, the machine you get will not be all singing/dancing. But it will do what it does WELL.

Stick with branded gears - Shimano or SRAM.

Do not buy from Walmart. Even if you get a deal on a good bike, it is going to be put together by some chimp on minimum wage.

I would look at a Specialized Hard rock. A good entry level machine. Failing that, Giant Rock SE isn't bad. Start looking at local bike shops etc.

I do not know about US retailers, but try these UK shops for an idea of what is out there:

I personally wouldn't recommend either bike. I can see why the blackcomb could be tempting w/ disk brakes and full suspension.
There are a few good things about the bike, but many that make it not worth it.
First off, read the shipping weight. It said 46.50 pounds, which is ridiculously heavy, unless its a dh/ fr bike. And while that may look somewhat like one, its not at all..
Second, the brakes are disk, but promax brand disks will probably do you about as much good as v brakes will, and they're more expensive.
and third, NEVER get full suspension for that price.

Sorry for the rant

I would recommend using your local craigslist or going to your LBS (local bike shop)

Be careful with Craigslist though. It can have great deals, (I got a 1100$ bike for 280$, for example) but you can get ripped off really easily. easily.

As dukeofrugby said, don't by a full suspension for under a $1000. Unless you are planning on huge jumps and drops a good full suspension rig is expensive. If all you will be doing is light trail riding and on road, get a hybrid or hardtail mt. bike. And I would check out the local bike shop and ebay before buying one at walmart, unless that's all you can afford at this time.

Dont buy any bike that could possibly come from wal-mart. They break down easily and are not worth repairing. Go for a Raleigh is you want a less expensive mountain bike or Trek if price is not an issue. Try it out first to know if its right for u
