I agree with some of the previous, trim nails, stop in the act and have an alternative ready; scratching posts, which can be made attractive with catnip/valerian.
However, don't ever declaw your cat- many people don't know this, but not just the claws are taken, but the entire first part of the toe is cut off: 10 amputations at once. This is animal abuse and often causes severe behavioral problems in cats.

Add a variey of scratchers to your home. Mine prefer the cardboard ones that come with catnip. We have 2 vetical ones attached to doors, 3 flat ones, and 1 slanted one. The cats never bother the furniture since they have a variety of scratchers spread around for their convienance. I live in an apartment, so you may need more depending on the size of your home.
The cardboard ones are cheap, and they have two sides to use. They last a really long time.
Nail timming also helps. I trim my cats front claws about once a month or more often if needed, and trim the back claws when needed.

well you could buy your cat a scratching post, or even take it to the groomers and have the nails trimmed...some groomers can put those plastic caps on the nails (doesn't look very comfortable though). I know many people will disagree with this but if it came to last resort, and u had to get rid of your cat because of this destroying habit your could ponder the thought of declawing the front feet...just speak to your veterinarian about it...they may have some good ideas...good luck

When a cat scratches your furniture it does so because it's trying to sharpen its claws. As much as you may not want to the best way to stop your cat is to put adhesive strips on your furniture. Many pet store carry special double sided adhesive strips you can put on your sofas or chairs to keep your cat from scratching them. (Cats hate to have sticky things on their paws.) Also you must have a place where you cat can scratch. a good scratching post is the best solution. Then show your cat it's OK to scratch there but not on the sofa. Soon your cat will lose all interest in everything but the scratching post.

Get it a scratching post, or maybe get its nails trimmed. And whenever you catch it in the act stop it. I did all those things for my cat but i had to resort a little farther down the line and use a spray bottle with water and spray it when it kills the furniture.

Well there are alot of thing you can do in this situation. You can get her nails cut. They sell special scissors at the store to cut your cat nails. If you do this they will grow back in a week so you have to do it every week. You cat get her declawed which is painful but won't grow back. All cats also needs a scratching post too. So you can do one of these. Good luck. â¦&diamsâ¦

Your cat needs a scratch toy. The pet store has many to pick from. Spend the money and get one. Well worth it.

Buy a couple scratching post! I have 3 and he doesn't scratch any furniture. Plus, you need to stop the action when catching him/her in the act. Good Luck!

Don't get rid of your kitty. Don't get her declawed either. This is painful and can cause aggression. Get some cat nail clippers. They are not expensive and are easy to use once you get the hang of it. Just don't clip too far down and hit a blood vessel.
