Have you downloaded the "quickfix" file. That speeds up satellite lock but it has to be updated weekly. Also it may not lock if you are already moving

What car do you drive? If its a Renault or Vauxhall, the chances are its due to the windscreen and you will need to buy an exterior aerial for it.
Have you left it to try and find a signal for about 20 minutes? If the GPS gets confused and doesn't know where it is (because it has been switched on in a place that is very different to the last place it was operated), it has to download what it known as "the almanac" from one of the satellites. This takes 12.5 minutes. It then takes a further 2.5 minutes to find the required satellites.
If that doesn't work - try running it in your garden and see if it gets a signal there. If it doesn't - take it back!

It depends on if you have an ultra-violet sheild coating on your windscreen. If you have, then the signal won't go through it. You will need an external ariel.
