to ramchandra...are you a doctor or anes? the question is obvious and is answerable to health doctors only who are yahoo answer users. If your a anesthesiologist it would be much better.

No--as general anaesthetic is safer than a full anaesthetic but both won`t cause memory loss
If the operation was on the brain then you could suffer some memory loss.

Well you won't remember the surgery, and you might not remember some things immediately after you wake up, but beyond that I don't think people usually experience memory loss from general anesthesia.

Umm, what was the question?
No after the anesthesia wears off there should not be memory loss.
That is only experienced from eating out of or cooking with aluminum, and some pharmaceutical, or illegal drugs!

Except in certain cases, general anesthesia only
puts you out for the duration of the surgery
so that you don't feel the pain of the surgeon's knife.Of course,it would be better for you to consult both your surgeon and the anesthetist,
instead of getting advise from lay people like us
on the net who,to tell you the truth ,are half baked.

There are certain drug that will cause short term memory loss, like remembering going into the OR, which is called retrograde amnesia (versed). But he should not experience any long term type memory loss.

Thats what those who has undergone GA says. The more they have undergone GA, the more forgetful they are. My wife has undergone GA twice, she used to tell me she is very forgetful. Certain things I want her to forget, yet she remembers! So I am not very sure now. How you wish those people that you have borrowed money from undergo GA for them to forget that they have loaned you money.

It depends. If one has dementia or Alzheimer's disease then general anesthesia can make it worse. It happened to my aunt.
