As a veterinarian, I see so many pets w genetic defects that the owners still breed despite my pleads.... not only that, but they charge $600+++ for the puppies! And stupid people pay it!!!!
This last week for example:
Ehrlichia positive poodle, hair very matted, outdoor dog, O refuses treatment for the ehrlichia (which is pretty cheap): planning on breeding her w the uncle's maltese next heat cycle and sell the puppies for at least 500
Chihuahua male: crypthorchid (a testicle that fails to descend), luxating patellas (kneecaps that pop in and out of place and will cause arthritis later in life) both disorders genetic, and also evil little dog that nobody can touch: will breed him bc he is a "brindle color"
Dachshund female: hateful little dog. Even bites mom. Already had 2 litters. This is a bad personality trait that will be inherited by the pups.
Cocker spaniel female: bad ear problems, so bad will require surgery, bad elbows, hypothyroid: owner has been trying to get her pregnant for the past couple of years (fortunately won't come pregnant, hypothyroid may be the cause), now came down w mammary cancer at the early age of 5 years.
Bulldogs in general: they can't even give birth on their own! this is Mother Nature trying to yell at you that bulldogs shouldn't exist! Skin problems, breathing problems, bad hips, endocrine diseases, overheat easily, screw tail disease.... these dogs are predisposed to everything!
seriously people..... the breeding part is bad enough, but the stupid people buying these puppies and encouraging this type of disgusting behavior is horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely agree. I'm in Texas where, right along the border, and its like a third world country down here. I'm not native so its shocking to me. I see people selling "purebred schnauzers" out of their trucks on street corners... except wait that poor little puppy looks like a labrador mix!
I hate it, and none of the immigrant population neuters/spays their animals so there are all these critters running around, getting hit by cars, at least this is how the representative at the local humane society explained it to me. I almost hit two different chihuahuas in the same spot in the same week once, neither appeared spayed/neutered which would explain the wandering! I see dead dogs on the roads at least every other day.
I found a pregnant cat a month ago - the humane society wouldn't take her because they were too full from other backyard bred animals. Luckily I ride horses so she and her kittens became barn cats and all were promptly neutered/spayed!
What is really the problem is when people leave animals in tact not realizing it leads to over population, death, illness, starvation etc etc. They want to witness "what is natural, the miracle of life," and then sell them for $50 on the corner. Okay well domesticating the wold wasn't exactly natural now was it? We're ultimately responsible for their health and well being so leaving an animal intact is morally wrong.

I am against puppy mills and and cat mills and backyard breeding of any animal. The animals bred are of poor quality or at the very least not fit to breed. 3 qualities of animals... pet, show, and breeding.
Those who breed domestic cats or puppies in general are just adding to the aniaml population that needs homes. With some many animals in the shelters, those people should be ashamed. Back yard breeders are a huge contributer to the problem, and puppy mills are just beyond awful. I have actually seen dogs that look nothing like the pure-bred they are claiming the animal is.

In the last year I have seen more stupid people doing really stupid things, in fact I have resigned as leader of our local pug club because:(many reasons, but here are just a few)
One member had a female pug due to deliver puppies, she went into labor and the backyard breeder let her go outside ALL day and when she came back in, she delivered 2 of the 3 puppies expected, the 3rd puppy was either delivered outside or could not come out of the canal, meanwhile the female pug would not take care of the other two puppies she had just delivered. The backyard breeder wanted to ask her vet for a shot of pitocin (pardon my spelling) and she called me instead and asked what she should do, I am not a breeder and never will be, but thought maybe an ultrasound or at the very least a trip to the vet would be in this pug's best interest, the breeder didn't want to because of the cost and decided to wait, sure enough 3 days later she took the pug to the vet and the last baby was still stuck inside her and would not have come out, the vet performed an emergency c-section and the puppy was delivered and was okay, believe it or not. I kept asking myself why would you risk the health and the life of your pugs? Basically it came down to, money was more important than the welfare of these pugs. Wow, what an idiot and how very sad!
In fact, two of our other group members (different families) lost their breeding pugs over the summer, while they were in heat, but here is the kicker, both families let their pugs out without leashes, collars, harnesses any identification, no microchips, no ID collars, or fence or any ties to keep these pugs safe and at home, basically let their pugs roam all over the countryside-while in heat- how stupid can you be! The pugs were stolen, one family got their pugs returned because our group called animal control for her, in her area, the other pugs were never found, the family never lifted a finger to even contact neighbors, put an ad in the paper, talk to humane societies, animal control etc. basically the animals were not worth the effort and I find that so terrible. Personally, I would love to do the same thing to these backyard breeders that they have done to their pugs, but then I would be thrown in jail.....(why aren't they) My pugs are very much a part of my family and would not leave any stone unturned to find them, if by terrible chance they ever got lost, but then again they never go outside without me or without a leash, but backyard breeder......obviously could care less about their pugs' welfare, their life and or health they are just out there to make money, it makes me very ill!

Definitely. Two of my three dogs are mutts and I love them to bits, but in my opinion, breeding should only be done by those who know what they're doing, are using good bloodlines and are breeding to improve their breed (or produce good cross-bred pups) rather than to make money.
My youngest dog, a 7 month old lab, is the perfect example of why puppy mills should be banned- she was donated to our vet school by a puppy farm for teaching and then PTS, because of a heart problem that she has turned out not to have (I suspect that it was more because she's a bit of a runt & had very wonky eyes and they just wanted rid of her) ...I rescued her to give her a second chance.
She has though, got the worst hip dysplasia that my vet and I have ever seen. Granted, litters from parents with good hip scores can still develop CHD, but there's no way that this little girl could have been from scored parents...these guys are just out to make money, and don't care about the 'quality' of the animals they are producing, or about any inherited health problems that may develop with time.
Just my two cents...

I have been in rescue for many years and in doing so, I get to deal with the consequences that these puppy millers and backyard breeders produce. People think nothing of breeding their little Fifi, but what they don't realize is a good number of those pups will end up abused, neglected, abandoned, and possibly even killed by cruelty.
There are 4 dogs being born each year for every person. Does that sound like we need more?! Geesh people!!

I think some of you people think all backyard breeding is bad ! First people, I do not like puppy mills ! But what you call backyard breeding do not mean these people do not know what they are doing, I do & did ! I've worked with two vets & yes a pet shop, but we did not buy from puppy mills! You say that they are out for the money ! WHAT the H do you think all breeders want ? The money ! COME ON PEOPLE, DO YOU THINK THEY JUST GIVE THEM AWAY ? They sell them for the money, same with the puppy mills, same as what you call backyard breeders, & not all backyard breeders sell their pups some give them away. Anyone that breeds dogs are out for the money ! YOU CAN NOT TELL ME THEY ARE NOT ! WHY IN THE H WOULD THEY DO IT, IF NOT FOR THE MONEY ? All so, just because your not a breeder does not mean you don't know what you are doing. Some breeder don't know what they are doing or don't care. If someone want to breed their dog & loves that dog, they will find out all they can before selling or breeding their dog or should, about mom & dad & grandparents & so on & so on.. You can't say all backyard breeders don't know what they are doing or all breeders do ! It's so funny you guys say backyard breeders are out for just the money, LOL.. Like I said, what do you think that puppy mills & breeders are out for ? It's the people that don't know what they are doing, it's not just all backyard breeders. If anything, it's some backyard breeders, just like it's some breeders ! I've also worked with the Humane Society we've picked up puppy's from breeders that was just in bad shape, no food or water, puppy's standing in cage with poo up to their legs. THIS WAS NOT A MILL ! But, does'nt mean all breeders are like that , I know this. I also know all backyard breeders are not all the same. I also know all breeders want the money, just like all puppy mills !
I have been reading these answers & it's sad that you people say all backyard breeders are the same, how in the H would you know ? You don't know me or everyone that
breeds ! I've met some breeders that don't give a D about the female or the male or even the puppys, does that mean all breeders are like that, NO ! I think before you say all backyard breeders, you should do some reading or ask questions. You can't go by just a few people that call themselves breeders or backyard breeders ! Yes, there are people that don't care about the dogs & that gives the ones that do a bad name too. But who has been F over by breeders NOT BACKYARD BREEDERS ? I have for one, but I'm smart enought to know NOT ALL ARE LIKE THAT, & I would never say all breeders are ! Just like what you call backyard breeders, they are not all the same.. Just because some people beat their PETS, does that mean we all beat our pets ? NO ! I'm trying to make a point here, not all breeders are bad , but PLEASE, don't say all backyard breeders are the same ! I've worked very hard to learn what I know, I've worked with vets, the humane Society, did lots of reading & asking a lot questions, before I did any breeding or even thought about it ! I loved my dogs & my pups, I even cryed when I sold one. They had all of their puppy shots, dewormed, dewclaws removed, tails docked, & vet check up before selling them, also mom's went into the vet to make sure they were doing fine while carring their pups & also after having them ! I think people NEED TO BE EDUCATED ! Also the one's that say all breeders are good & all backyard breeders are bad they need to be educated too !

I hate puppy mills and any person who sells dogs from these mills. I volunteer at a shelter that takes these dogs in all the time. It is sick to think people are breeding dogs just to make more money.

I am against puppy mills, but what do you define as backyard breeding? I had two Miniature Schnauzers a stud and female(the B word is not allowed on YA in the dog section) and only allowed breeding twice. I did not want to be to hard on the female. After her second litter I had her Spayed. No, I don't believe the dogs should be put in the bakyard and left. That I am agaianst.
