To me it is basically about the same. But asking that they be your girlfriend makes things clear. That you are interested in more than just hanging out together. If there is a girl you like more than all the others. Go for it and ask her.

When you ask a girl to become your gf, it is a much bigger deal than just taking her out on a date. A date is basically just a way to go out and have fun getting to know someone. But when you ask a girl to be your gf, this is telling her that you care about her more than just wanting to go out and have fun. It is a commitment that you will be by her side and help her and be there in the good times and bad.

It always depends on the girl getting asked. We're all different. I'm personally more comfortable being asked to hang out, don't call it a date. That's weird, it's 2007, I don't need to be courted. If we've hung out a few times, then you might bring up the girlfriend thing. But you never ask a girl who doesn't know you to be your girlfriend.

Yes it is a bigger deal....asking someone out on a date is just saying that you want to spend time with them (one on one) and get to know them....taking it one step further and asking them to be your girlfriend is saying that you are committed to them and feel that you know them well and enjoy being around them all the time...that you want them to be a more permanent part of your life.
It's similar to a job...for the first 90 days you are on a probationary period...and at the end of the 90 days, your employer will formally "offer" you a permanent position.

Asking someone for a date may be the first step to something more serious.
Asking the girl to be yours is that serious step.
So yes, there is a difference.
But the intention is usually the same, as is the message:
I think you are worth time and attention - and hope you think i am worth your time and attention.

Yes it is because being in a relationship is a commitment to another person while a date is to get to know someone on a more personal level.

to me it means if you ask her out on a date, it's just going out on one date. If you ask her to be your gf, that's more of an exclusive thing. I don't have more than one boyfriend, but will go out with different men on dates. Hope that makes sense.

It depends on the date. If it's just a date to a dance, then the girl could assume that you just wanted to have someone to go with. Otherwise, if you go out ona date, it's assumed that you are dating.

One date is only a short time period that you've committed too. BF/GF is a full time committment.

just one date isn't like a full on commitment, being a girlfriend/boyfriend IS.
