On the other hand, if I am out alone, I am ignored (or piningly stared at--see my other question here). Does their competition instinct kick in or do they feel safer about flirting with a woman if she is in a group rather than alone when an actual interaction is potentially more feasible?

Maybe it's the way you act! When you are in a group you act more bubbly and smile more. When you are alone you maybe more reserved or smile less.

It could be that the pressure is less accute for a guy to talk to a group that just one girl. Or you yourself act differently wether you're out with friends or alone.

guys like to size each other up
and if you are talking to another guy then they get jealous and they show that you are with them but they can still make you smile.
and when youre with another girl maybe they're just being nice and trying to get you to talk about him so that he will have the spotlight without having to actually be in the light.

I think you're reading far too much into this. Ignore it - it happens to everyone. Some men are just flirty or friendly. It means nothing.
