R&S is a lot like political talk radio : most people "tune in" to either not to have their existing beliefs challenged, but to have their beliefs affirmed.

The propensity for circular logic is pervasive in an environment whereby fundamental belief systems are questioned and there is a corresponding lack of substantive knowledge to corroborate a particular stance.
This typically leads to personal attacks when there is little other to say once the der rigeur 'prove it' has been stated.
Basically I view it all as a failure of education and primarily a function of 'children having children' whereby the resulting child doesn't gain sufficient background in interpersonal skills and goes through life exhibiting a distinct lack of raising.
Being a Christian and from a long line of Christians, I don't view all the atheist content here to be misplaced. Likewise some of the Christian content misses the mark with a zealous misconception that we as people have insight into the white throne judgment.
Also, I endeavor to keep my answers relevant and gentle but this sometimes requires the utmost restraint given some of the pea brained stuff I encounter.
I end up wanting to yell "If you can't state your case any better than that why don't you just shut up" and this has resulted in some hard feelings which I didn't intend; but do not shy away from either.
Be all this as it may; character and morals count and I continually attempt to overlook these very vocal miscreants as persons deserving my pity instead of my wrath ... but sometimes I get fed up enough to call somebody on their mindless idiotic illogical fallacy.
I guess I'm only human too !

Most religions are based upon faith in their God. For most people, their God is invisible. Many different religious beliefs have similarities - and yet are very far apart in their actual beliefs.
So maybe it is just curiosity as to what is behind door number 2 or maybe it is because they want to show another religion how their religion has faults whereas their own religion is perfect.
Sometimes it's for knowledge or understanding of why people dress differently or act differently so that we can better understand them.
Sometimes it's because we don't want to offend the other person by saying or doing something that they would consider offensive and so we try to learn.
There are many reasons for religious debates and discussions.
If you really want to see debates and mudslinging though, hop on over the to political field - they will throw each other to the lions!

Its all fun, I come here to just have a good time and see some entertaining questions and answers, and supply a few of my own. I don't take this place serious nor do I get offended by anything here, whether it agrees with my views or not.

Sometimes it's easy to forget YQA isn't intended as a debate forum. Aside from RS and Philosophy, much of the rest of YQA is about asking questions and getting answers.
Probably Yahoo was surprised when some of the sections became forums, rather than questions and answers to convey information.

R&S does turn into a pep rally sometimes, but serious questions recieve lots of serious answers. There's a lot of cheerleading, but there's also a lot of learning and sharing here.
If you want to see real abuse, check out politics and government. Those guys have NO discourse.

Those are both debatable. The best thing to do with loaded questions is to unload them.

I have no idea, I guess folks just need to vent. Let 'em, it doesn't stop the truth.
