I recently had some incisions made on my back by a doctor and was not prescribed any antibiotics. When I asked the nurse she said no antibiotics should be taken unless there is an infection present. .... Also about a year ago I had a tooth that cracked and had to be pulled the dentist did not prescribe any antibiotics because "there was no infection". I know some doctors that prescribe antibiotics at the drop of a hat and some dont. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME STUDIES THAT ARE PUBLISHED TO PROVE THAT ORAL ANTIBIOTICS ARE NOT NECESSARY TO PREVENT INFECTION?

All the statements you made are true. Some doctors order antibiotics like crazy while others don't. Here, as soon as we come down with something, the doctors readily ordered antibiotics. Unless there are signs of infection, antibiotics shouldn't be given judiciously as they do depress the immune system. You want our body to use its own natural immunity.

When antibiotics are given right away, the bugs developed antigens making them more of a resistant strain. Besides, antibiotics for viruses are not effective.as with bacterial infection. When there is infection, blood culture should be done and sensitivity. This way, the bug will be identified and the proper antibiotic to combat it.

Several studies were made which affected the common practice of surgeons.. They discovered that the use of antibiotics before surgery (esp when it's extensive) to be administered pre-operatively. is effective in preventing infection post-operatively. Therefore, pts' hospital stay is shortened and recovery phase good. They are usually given 24-48 prior to surgery.
