I have left the country and am trying to figure out if that resets my driving liscence. I am here on a student visa which expires in October and want to go touring the country before.

I know that there is a form I have to fill out if I need to get a UK license but I want to know if that is necessary.

I think you'd probably be best contacting the DVLA for accurate information. Below is a link to the Direct Gov website which might be able to help you as well. As a general rule, it seems that you can drive in the UK on your Canadian licence for up to 12 months (after which time you would have to get a UK licence i.e. get a provisional licence and pass your test in the UK), although, again, I'd recommend you contact the DVLA to clarify this.

If i remember rightly, if you leave the UK, even if its for a day trip to France etc, so long as you get passport stamped again when you come back to UK, your 1 year of being able to drive resets. Maybe call your local police station to confirm this, but pretty sure thats how it works.
