I'm planning to tour the East Coast, with New York as my base. Which places should I not miss?

It will depend upon what you like, but I recommend you see Maine -- even if you only make it to Kittery or Ogunquit, it is just beautiful. You'll probably want to check out Salem & Boston in Massachusetts. Mystic, Connecticut is interesting. Cape May and Atlantic City, NJ. Don't forget about Washington, DC. Baltimore is supposed to be nice, but I've not been there yet.
