If a persone doesn't believe in a Judgement day or God or a form of afterlife then I don't see a barrier in front of him that would prevent him doing lots of bad things that are hard to be tracked.
Though I see lots of unbelievers not acting so bad.
What's the reason?
If I didn't believe I would steal from banks, hack people's accounts, kill people I hate and so on... That would b fun I guess... But I can't!

If you've been depressed for such a long time that you're contemplating afflicting permanent loss to all the world by killing yourself, then you need to seek help. And I don't mean this as demeaning or insulting. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It's not "normal". To remove yourself from the world is a selfish act and you not only affect yourself, you affect the future of anyone/anything that might've been in it and might've loved you. People you might've helped, that you wouldn't be there for if you were gone. Family that would only have you as a memory, friends that would have to deal with an empty seat where you might've sat. Forever. You want to die? Do it the old fashioned way. Wait. Death comes to all of us, I guarantee you that. Don't cause a world of people to miss out on what you could be and what you could do just for the sake of a lost love. The heart mends itself in time. the loss of life is permanent.

I find it funny that so many people have answered this question in terms of saying people can be good without religion but then say it in such a mean fashion.

This is a legitimate question that many religious people have, and I see no reason not to answer it in a calm and understanding fashion.

There are many reasons other than God and Hell to be good. Yes, not going to jail is one of them, the the smallest and most petty. There's the golden rule. You wouldn't want people running around hurting you or your loved ones, so why do it yourself? There's simple moral fiber. Just knowing you are a good person and doing the right thing can be fulfilling in itself. There is also whether you could live with yourself and your conscience knowing you've done something horrible and harmful to another human being, possibly ruining their life or the lives around them.

Yes, people without religion can be good and can want to be good. Also, I don't believe the asker would really do those things if he lost his faith, he was just using that as an example of how he thinks people without religion may think. I believe it truly is difficult for some religious people to understand those that aren't. I think whether or not you have religion, you choose the kind of person you want to be.

yes, but God sees and hears all. He looks at the heart and He knows our intentions and motives. He also knows what we'll do, say, or think before we even do it, say it, or think it. He's keeping track, don't worry. Whether a person 'believes' there is a Judgement day or not, each person will stand before God. That's God's Word. He's still in charge and full control. So don't worry.

God protects His children, you must not fear a mere man, who may kill the body, but fear God who can throw a man into hell. Luke 12:4,5†

"But what would it profit a man, if he gained the whole world, but lost his soul?"

God has a Perfect Plan for all of this. But you must remember, unless one knows the law, how would one know that what he/she does is sin? That's why it says, "Go ye into all the world".It's knowing the truth that makes men free.

People sin because it's fun and do it as long as they think they can get away with it. But sin comes with a paycheck. There's a price. You can garauntee their lives are miserable. Inside their hearts are never satisfied, and filled with torment, misery, discontentment, pain and agony. What good would all that lifestyle do, when all it brings is a life lived in fear, shame and running all the time. But the Bible says, "the wages for sin, is death".

Sooner later we all either come to a fork in the road or a dead-end.

But we have to remember that we were once sinners ourselves,Maybe we haven't robbed a bank or killed someone, but the Bible says that sin is sin is sin, and when we sin, we sin against God. It says, that whoever has broken even the least of God's laws is guilty of them all. Regardless, the punishment is the same. But we are called to love one another as the Lord first loved us when we were still yet sinners,

It Christ's Love that changes a man's heart. We must love one another even as ourselves. And pray for our enemies, Jesus said to bless and do good to them. How else will a person know what is right and good to do? How can a person know what kindness and mercy is without examples? You can't know love unless you first receive it, and you can't give what you don't have. Neither can you know to do what you've never been taught. Jesus said, "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do".

As believers, it's more important that we do what we were called to do and keep our eyes on the Lord and let God watch over the world. You can't let what others may or may not do deter you from doing your good works. When all is said and done, it's just going to be yourself & God, Just focus on the Lord and doing whatever it is He has gifted you to do, and trust Him with the rest.

Let your light shine so bright before men that they come to praise & glorify God because of your good works. So to answer you question of what can prevent a person(s) from doing such things? The Power of God's Love and Tender Mercies.

Actually - many religious people have comitted serious crimes against humanity, and in a larger scale than the atheists.

The danger is the hightened level of serotonin produced when becoming religious. It means that you get into a state of hearing voices, megically being led by "something", etc. And THAT can lead to the "sins" you're talking about. Atheists in general have a stable production of serotonin(but on the other hand more often too low, which cause a passive depression).

It is simple, atheists have what is called "Conscience". I do not know if you had it or not. I had read a lot of stories about Theists who blinded their consciences and use their god as an excuse to

a. Lie blatantly. (Claim they know something, but it is all hearsay)
b. Use their religion as an excuse to cheat on their spouse. (Tell their spouse they are going to religious function when they only religious thing they do is to religiously cheat)
c. Murder ( Even Genocide, look at the person that was written in their holy book where he goes around killing people after he deliver the commandment. Look at all those terrorist)
d. Commit Adultery (Look at some denomination of some religions)
e. Commit Incest (Some used the phrase "children are your property" as an excuse to have sex with their kids)
f. Sexually abuse children (Look at the news, you have all sorts of "religion teachers", priests, pastors, having sex with their charge, and use their holy book as an excuse)
g. Steal ( take other people things away without permission and then claim they god ask them to be taken away)
h. etc etc ..... read the news.

In fact, if you are a people of certain religion, you are more inclined to commit such vices.

--------

For the reason "Why is it good to be good?" Would you like someone else to do bad things onto you?

Do you understand the Phrase "Do what you want others to do to you and do not do what you do not want others to do to you"?

Why are you relating crime with Atheism. Religion is in no way a prerequisite for good morals. If that weren't true, there would not be priests that enjoy the company of young boys. Hitler was catholic. Would he vehemently gone after only the Jews if he were an Atheist? At it's core, religion promotes discrimination. In fact the pope just had a press release (re)decreeing that the only way to heaven is to believe as he says to believe. That is you must be catholic. That is discrimination through and through. Believe as I do or you are worse off.

So basically, you're saying you are like a 2 year old. You only do good things so you can get what you want and not get spanked? How about doing good because it's what normal people do. If "god" is the ONLY thing that keeps you from doing certain things I suggest you run, don't walk, to your nearest mental health facility.

How many christians do you see doing bad things? Look at:-

1. Dioceses going bankrupt from paying off the kids that their priests have molested,
2. People murdering doctors for not doing exactly what the christians want them to, ("kill people I hate")
3. Sending vicious hate mail to people who don't agree with them,
4. Going in for genocide, like Hitler or Stalin, both brought up as christians,
etc. etc.
If you are religious, then it's open slather, mate. Just confess afterwards and be forgiven

Many people do not have fear of punishment as motivation to be good, either Christians **or** atheists.

Just looking at being good and law-abiding from a solely loss-gain perspective, it would be, in the long run, counterproductive and personally detrimental for you to be too bad. That's one reason why you don't see too many atheists running around killing people right and left etc.

Because human beings in general know the difference between right and wrong-- I'm Agnostic but I won't hurt someone because I just know it's wrong, no because I have the threat of Hell. Wrong is wrong, there's no way around it.

It scares me that some people say they do good because the Bible told them...what if there was no Bible, would those people turn bad? If they suddenly weren't threatened by Hell, if we proved Hell didn't exist, would those people murder and steal?
