I had a cat a couple years ago and I was sitting on my bedroom floor, placing some good food down on the floor for the cat to eat. I don't remember what, I think it was some chicken or something. Point is, it was definately a yummy treat that I expected my cat to gobble up. Instead, all of a sudden, the cat got all tense and freaked out and was staring inside my closet. It just kept looking in there and it's eyes were real big. She lost all intrest in the food and ran under the bed. No more than 30 minutes later, a fire started in that same closet. I swear. To this day, I still don't know how that fire started, but it was a serious fire. The whole place burnt. My family and I made it out unharmed, thank goodness. But sadly, I don't think my poor cat made it out. I never saw her after that.
Does anyone besides me think that this cat sensed that something wasn't right?
Or am I crazy for even thinking that?
Thanks, and sorry this is so long.

cpinatsi-I'm sorry, but I was more worried about getting my two small children out of there than my cat. The front door was open while the house was on fire, but I think my poor cat died while trying to save her litter of kittens. Of course I was sad about it, but there wasn't much I could do for her...

cpinatsi-by the way, i DID NOT give you a thumbs down.
catloverami123-i would hope that if/when you have children your first thought would be to get them out! By the time we realised the fire and got ourselves out, the whole bedroom was aflame, the house was filling with smoke, and windows were exploding. so no, i did not go back in and try to save my cat.

Yeah i believe this to, last year my cat started acting really weird and meowed and scratched at my door until we let him in the house, and about an hour later a really bad storm hit with Sofball size hail which broke every window in my house and pretty much the whole neighborhoods windows and there was a tornado about a mile north of my town.

Of course she must have sensed the smell or something like heat that you couldn't sense. Not sixth sense or anything, just her natural senses which are higher than ours. I can't believ you didn't grab her and get her out of there! I also can't believe you don't know what happened to her! The fire brigade would have found her body in the house if she was burned. Were the window open, was there an escape route for her or what?

Yes, they strangely know things before you do. Just last night my cat jumped off my lap and ran to my son's bedroom door just staring at it. 10 minutes later, we heard my son screaming and writhing in pain from an upset stomach. The cat came into the room with us and was getting really upset seeing my son cry. The cat jumped on his bed and started crying too and was rubbing his head and butting up against my son's face trying to soothe him. He must have known something was going on before we did.

Heck, most of the time I don't think my cats can sense when something has already happened.
On a more serious note, though. I have a hard time buying into the idea that cats, or any animals, have some kind of "sixth sense." I think it is more likely that animals have more acute senses that humans. So, your cat probably smelled something (smoldering, etc.) that preceded the fire, that you couldn't smell.

My vets wife told me that all she has to do is think about giving one of her cats a bath and the cat disappears.

I do believe they can - cats are very sensitive and they also know instinctively if you love them or not
