Different strokes for different folks.
I'm not sure that a VW is necessarily better built or more reliable than something French- that used to be the case but decreasing tolerances in manufacturing mean that the French can build a good car now! As the above poster suggests, the French cars are considered to be a livelier drive than their German counterparts, and so they suit some people better.
How much cheaper do you expect the French cars to be when they offer similar levels of equipment and perhaps a little more performance?
The engine from the new MINI is actually built by peugeot, so BMW must think they can make a decent one...
You suggest that you can't understand why anyone would buy French over German, but for my part as a young man with no immediate plans to start a family, I can't understand why anyone in my position with the money for a VW golf wouldn't buy a lotus elise! It's a matter of perspective.
Nevertheless, if you're really looking for reliability, the Japanese are a country mile ahead of even the Germans- for example, the Honda Vtec engine has never been the subject of a waranty claim. Not once. Ever. That means that no vtec engine of however many million they've produced thus far has ever had a fault while it has been under waranty. This is, quite simply, amazing.

If you're basing this on the 1st VW Beetles, WRONG! One of the greatest propaganda coups of the mid 20th century. They kept the same design so people would think they lasted forever. NOT! I knew a man that was religious about vehicle maintainence & owned a near original VW Beetle(1961, I think) He replaced all 4 fenders at least 3 x's each. Rebuilt the motor( hey, I don't want to call it an engine w/that many rebuilds) three times & the tranny twice. So much for German engineering. Ever notice that the "Beetle" disappeared after the mid-70's when it couldn't pass emissions tests? Then it was only sold in Mexico.

Buy German whenever you can.
Ford is not in the same class as VW, there's a reason for the price difference. You ever see an older Ford on the roads? No - they've all fallen apart, that's why, where a VW will last longer than you do.
As for the parts, well they may cost more, but you don't need to get them so often.

There are quite a few websites that would disagree with the quality of volkswagons - they are selling on reputations that they do not rightly deserve and here in North America this is largely due to the mistaken belief that anything built in germany is best. Personally I would transfer this faith to Japanese built vehicles. You dont say which Country you are in but I am guessing europe , of the three mentioned i would say Renault as they share a lot of there engineering with Nissan (I have a Sentra SE-R spec V- which shares underpinning with the Megane I believe. The Megane may be ugly as sin but it should handle really well.)

The French cars have a reputation for giving a good 'drive' -they tend to be lively and responsive, and the other main reason that everybody quotes is that the parts for the german cars are sooooo expensive. My sister-in-law had a sporty peugeot, and finally got rid of it 'cos it had too many problems, but they maintain their sales by advertising far more than the germans. Myself? I'll still to the japs thank-you.

V W are the most expensive car in their class so I'd go for something like a ford with all the extras fitted and the best engine for the same or less money.

Modern VW's don't last and last - they require almost as many repairs as the French brands, but using higher-cost parts.
If you want something to last and last, but a Toyota, Honda, Hyundai or Kia, or a German-built Ford.
