It is the combination of b&c, Our life has to flow through discrimination and devotion. Then only it can reach the goal(merging with god). It is also possible to compare with atmospheric air since we do not know which way the wind will blow. Our life also takes bizare directions driven by our fate.

Consider life as a motion, but a circular motion. A cycle. The evaporation from sea goes up and clouds bear it to the mountain top where it is poured as water and flows by river and joins the sea. Where does this starts? No answer. Same is the motion. Moon revolves the earth, Earth, bearing the moon, revolves the Sun and sun with galaxy revolves the 'x' (unknown) and the 'x' revolves the 'y' - and so on. animals excreta is the fertilizers for the plants and plants expire oxygen for animals and thus another cycle is formed. The whole universe is full of such cycles like the electrons and protons that makes big universes, which is endless, and thinking over it may do harm to our brain. So live happily for the day and live for the single Universe. This is the way of happiness.

Motion of a river. All rivers lead to the ocean. Ocean means God. River means soul.

The better example will be a wave of the ocean. This example was given by Lord Ram to the public of Ayodhya.
He said that the relation between a wave and another wave is only for some time and that relationship has no meaning. A wave's true relationship is with the ocean only. Same way our relationships with our kith and kin is only for a limited period and our relationship with the God is eternal.

So we are on the move but we should set our orientation correctly.

I think car is the best analogy for today because people can understand that they are not their car. Like that, the car is like the body. The one, who we really are, uses the body to get around in. But to relax in our home (soul), we have to park the car (meditation) and get out and walk into the living room. You cannot relax at home by driving the car into the living room. Also the car needs maintenance to run properly (yoga, pranayams) and it ages with time, where as the soul does not.
This analagoy is for human life. If we just mean life in general, consciousness, then I like the analogy of a plant. We can see how the life force pushes up the stem, same as it does our spine, against the force of gravity. And we can see plants able to push up through concrete, actually crack solid concrete sometimes to get through to the sun. Isn't this amazing?

i would choose 'river' coz it moves from its fountain to the ocean, its destination, after winding through planes and vales, so too man's life passes thru various stages but finally ends when the time comes.
