theromostates are there so you can get heat in the winter. It also makes the engine wun at the proper temp to get the best gas milage. Making it run to cold or to hot will make it run off.

Ya may mean a ' thermostat ' ( ? ) It's a temperature sensitive valve for the cooling system.
