You don't sound too rational yourself. Nascar doesn't always make the decisions we want, but I doubt they would appreciate your crude remarks either.

It's all about $$$$$$ and if you start making teams sit out races, you alienate the big money sponsors. It would be like the PGA telling Tiger Woods to take this week off, but it would be effective. Sit some high-profile drivers on the sidelines a few times and watch how quickly everyone will learn to pay attention to the rules. If the car has been gimmicked, don't just disallow the qualifying time. Send them home. And give them lessons in how to turn right!

I will be a NASCAR fan for life, but I have to agree with the asker on this one. Sometimes NASCAR seems arbitrary with their fines, penalties, decisions, etc. Hell, after the stuff that happened at the last Busch race, I don't think "NASCAR" and "rational" should even be used in the same sentence anymore.

The times have changed. It used to be that if you got into trouble you would get a fine and then you would learn your lesson and never do it again. If a driver like Jeff Gordon gets a fine of 100,000 dollars, its not a big deal to him. He has sponsor and contract money coming to him and that fine wont hurt his pocket book. What nascar needs to do is suspend a driver for more than one race and that will teach them a lesson.

Nascar has growing pains. 7 years ago all problems were handled in house behind closed doors and no one really talked about anything let alone criticized them. Now with the Internet the fans have everything spelled out, there is footage of the incident, there are websites to get the word out and everyone is discussing the incident by monday morning.
Nascar can't handle it. They will need to hire someone experienced to handle the fines and PR. They will have to define rules more explicitly and have set punishments for infractions. They are still in the old mode but the tide is changing and they are loosing fans. I hope the change comes in time.

Quite frankly, I've been asking myself that question for the past 6 years. Before NASCAR's "landmark tv package", they never really had any big problems...these past couple years have got me asking myself how many of their decision are based more on what makes for good tv.
