I remember reading/hearing somewhere that brain cells thrive on glucose. What happens if the body doesn't get enough glucose fast enough?

Without enough glucose, your brain can go into a coma (same with oxygen). Before this happens, your body gives you a lot of warning signs that glucose is going low. You might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, etc. Also, your body starts releasing hormones which help release stored up carbs (Glycogen) to increase your glucose level.

Blood glucose is the brains major source of fuel because neurons have no capacity for storing glucose. Although ketones can provide energy this is limited source and is used up quickly. Low blood glucose results in altered cerebral function, coma, seizures and eventually death.

a low glucose level will cause a person to become very sleepy, unresponsive, coma... then dead.

most of the time a person will make a rapid turn around once they have a good glucose level. it really depends upon how long the level has been too low.
