It depends on if you have the patience to change diapers for a newborn and potty train a toddler at the same time. It is completely up to you and your partner as to when you are ready. Sometimes siblings close in age get along great and sometimes they fight like cats and dogs. Every child and every family is different. Don't let people tell you when you should have your children. Others don't know what is best for you and your family.

I like the idea of 2 years between the first and second child; this allows the child to have a good relationship with you and feel well adjusted before bringing another child into the home. Plus, you might be able to start potty training your 2 year old and get him/her out of diapers, so that you're not buying diapers for two kids- expensive! 2 years is also close enough in age to allow them to be close to each other but not so close in age that they will not have any separate friends, which can be important for them to develop their own unique identities. Waiting longer between the first and second child has a tendency to create bigger amounts of sibling rivalry, because of the age gap and waiting 4 or more years is equivalent to the first and second child feeling like they have separate families. Waiting that long will make the second child take on the role of first born again and that too will create tremendous competition between your children.

Well, I waited five years and loved it. I had the luxury of having a kindergartner and time for my newborn. But, when we went for the third, I had them closer together (three years) and still had a good experience.
I learned a long time ago that if you don't have the second one by the oldest child's second birthday. Then, you should wait five years to avoid the jealousy and possible regression.

I personally am waiting until my son may start school... He's only 8 months right now so my husband and I have a long ways to go. But I think it's difficult to take care of one baby (and a husband..lol) it would only make it doublely as difficult to take care of two. But you would be the best judge in when to have the second, or third, or whatever # you may be on.

I actually think having kids pretty close together is a good idea. I am very close to my 2 years younger sister, and I honestly don't want more than 2 years between my kids. Even if it does cause more bickering when they are young, it will cause them to develop closer relationships as they grow up.

Somewhere between 9 months and 10 years. ;)
Seriously though it's such a personal decision based on your own lifestyle, etc...people told me I was NUTS to get two puppies at once, but I love it. People will tell you you're NUTS to have kids too close together, or NUTS to have them too far apart...whatever. It depends on what you think you can handle and what you and your partner/husband/boyfriend/fiance want.
