I'm 18 years old, and I finally have time to get a job. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure what to do. My friend told me that there is a job opening where he works (Hallmark) and i'm going to go there tommorow. Is it rude to go right up to the manager and say " My friend told me that there is a job opening" or " Are you hiring?". Do you have any tips for this sort of situation?

Or am I just thinking too much into it?.

The more formal the better.

You will most likely be directed straight to someone who takes resumes and you need to know from your friend if you should bring one.

The proper way to address an elder and someone who is your potential employer is NOT to act "familiar" with this person. Do not say "yeah" and address him/her by his/her first name if you know it.

To ask appropriately--you may try something like this--

Hello, my name is_________
I have an associate (or friend) who works here, he told me this is a great place to work and I am interested if there are any current job openings?

Smile, eye contact and shake hands.

Use proper english and remove any nasty body piercings that are visually distracting to the majority of normal people.

There are lots of tips for this situation. Some websites (search using careers, "job hunt" and you will be able to find several websites devoted to this situation). Also look up a couple of books in your nearest library.
The best idea is to start by thanking the person seeing you for seeing you. How you look and behave counts as much as what you say. Being straight forward about your desire for a job is a great way to start, just don't make excuses about why you haven't got one already! Ask a few questions to make sure you would be happy there and take it from there. Good Luck!

First off, bring a resume - list your schooling, your GPA, any other work experience you may have had, any clubs or activities you participated in, and any skills you have. have a list of references as well.

tips for writing a resume - http://jobsearchtech.about.com/od/resumes/Writing_Resumes.htm

Being direct is easy - first you'll be dealing with a receptionist, and you can ask her if there are any current job openings. If there are, she will tell you and direct you to the proper person. They may have you schedule an interview time, or fill out an application. Don't stress about having to come back another time, it's just part of their hiring practices.

PLEASE dress nicely - and I DON'T mean jeans and a tshirt. Wear slacks, a nice collared shirt or blouse, dress shoes if you have them. Sometimes appearance is what gets you the job - or loses you the job, regardless of the position you are applying for.

Try not to say "um" or"like" to often either.

Good luck!!

Speaking to the manager directly and in a quiet corner is the best way to approach it.

Mention that you are interested in the store and would like to join the Hallmark team! be ready to show some identification, have references of friends or neighbors who know your character. The store might need thier phone numbers to ask that person's opinion of you. Wear a smart outift and a smile!

Best of luck to you!

"Hi, I'm John. I am interested in working for Hallmark, I heard there is a job opening here."
